Het leven en de carrière van Anthonie van der Heim (1693-1746) spelen zich af tegen het decor van het Tweede Stadhouderloos Tijdperk (1702-1747). Als zoon van een raadsheer uit de Hoge Raad en neef van de raadpensionaris van Holland werd hij na zijn studie rechten in Leiden achtereenvolgens benoemd tot secretaris van de Generaliteitsrekenkamer, in 1727 vanwege zijn aanleg voor financiële aangelegenheden tot thesaurier-generaal van de Unie en in 1737 tot raadpensionaris van Holland. Hij had te maken met de ambitie van de Friese stadhouders, spanningen met Pruisen, met Frankrijk en met de erfopvolging van keizer Karel VI. Deze politieke biografie laat de worsteling zien van een raadpensionaris die beperkt was in zijn handelen door de slechte staat der financiën en gehinderd door binnenlandse tegenstellingen en tegenwerking. Vanwege zijn slechte gezondheid moest hij de regie uit handen geven. Moegestreden overleed hij op weg naar zijn kuuroord, Spa.

The picture that pastors have of themselves and of their experiences in the ministry is ambivalent. On the one hand they find the pastoral work which they perform meaningful, important and relevant. On the other hand pastors suffer from chronic stress of some sort, caused by different factors on the micro, meso and macro level of religion, church and society. Many pastors experience the modernization and subsequently the secularization process as a very serious problem, which negatively influences religious life within the parish. Pastors are bowed down by uncertainty over how their work contributes to the parish mission in today's society and, even more so, by doubts over what that mission is, in particular, the diaconal mission. Which direction can, shall, should the pastor take if neither the church nor the theological institutions are able to provide him or her with a clear frame of reference, an attractive perspective, a convincing policy, a plausible course of action, and a meaningful set of aims, goals and objectives ? There is no alternative but to risk taking responsibility for oneself and choosing one's own course of action. To take this risk is not reckless or foolhardy, as long as the choices are always informed by a religious self-reflection that is open to tradition as well as to the future. This allows the pastor to be his own guide, to transgress useless customs and habits, and cross the boundaries into as yet unknown territory. The task of education must be to provide the foundation that enables the pastor to make those choices and take those risks in a well-considered, prudent and truly religious manner. This study represents not only an interpretative description of some of the education for ministry in today's societal, cultural and ecclesiastical context in the western world but also a proposal for a new model: the reflective ministry model.

In March 2016 the Dutch Case Studies Project began in which about fifty chaplains participated as co-researchers in collecting practice-based evidence on what chaplains aim for, how they pursue it, and with what results. The chaplain-researchers produced case studies which were discussed collaboratively in research communities which were chaired by academic researchers. The engagement of chaplains in research can be understood from the development in the profession of integrating research into chaplaincy. While it is presumed that research benefits chaplains’ practices, so far the impact of research on chaplains’ practice had not been studied. Based on mixed-methods (observation, interviews, survey, focus groups), this dissertation describes, analyzes and reflects on the perceived change of chaplains’ professionalism as a result of their participation in the Case Studies Project. This practical theological research provides insight in the value of the double role of chaplain-researcher for chaplains’ professionalism.

This volume offers a conceptual and empirical study of the religious profession.
