The advent and approach of colonization and Christianity condemned the African traditional religion and culture as paganistic and backward. This created issues of bi-culturalism and bi-religiousness in personal and religious identity that the church needs to address. For those living in most post-colonial countries, there is the existence of deep psychological and spiritual scars that need healing. The Western Christian rituals in use in most African mainline churches exclude any traditional religious rituals. A new pastoral theology of care and psychodynamic understanding of integrative consciousness is needed in these contexts. A pastoral care-giver with integrative consciousness (possessing an awareness of both the traditional and Western worldview and/or integration thereof) is required to address the psychological and religious identity conflict existing in post-colonial contexts such as Zimbabwe.

The meaning of pastoral care in modern multicultural societies is challenged and reexamined from a pluralistic, global perspective in this book. Emmanuel Lartey stresses the importance of recognizing different cultural influences on individuals in order to effectively counsel, guide and empower them. He provides a clear and concise history of pastoral care and considers its relationship to different models of counseling and spirituality. This new edition has been updated to reflect postmodern and postcolonial studies and provides illustrations of how an intercultural approach can work in practice. Theological teachers and students will welcome its return as an indispensable introduction to the field of pastoral care. In Living Color is an essential source of inspiration to leaders from any religious stream who wish to provide pastoral care in a way that reflects their community's cultural diversity. This book is also a useful resource for practitioners in a wider range of caring contexts who work in multicultural environments.

Pastoral theologians from Congo, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, and Zimbabwe address, in this book, the issues of leadership, Ubuntu (community), gender-based violence, political violence, healing, and deliverance faced by pastors and ministers in African contexts today. Drawing on biblical, theological, social scientific, and cultural contextual perspectives, these African Christians offer much needed insights to assist in the care and counseling of persons towards healing, health, and well-being. --For many years I have drawn on seven African-born pastoral care and counseling colleagues for insights related to the cultural and religious models and practices of pastoral care and counseling needs of African-Americans. In this new book these practical theologians have deliberately turned their attention to the pastoral care needs of the African Christian community, and their focus is on the negative impact that colonialism has had on African traditional caring practices. Moreover, they have targeted the need to apply pastoral care resources to the ongoing current African problems such as HIV/AIDS, domestic violence, and political corruption.-- --Edward P. Wimberly, PhD, Professor of Pastoral Care, Special Assistant to the President, Interdenominational Theological Center --In this timely volume the authors demonstrate that it is impossible to talk about practical theology in an African context without discussing the issues of health, healing, and wholeness. Tapiwa Mucherera and Emmanuel Lartey assemble an impressive, important, and incisive collection of essays that deal with practical theological concerns and serve to illuminate the African experience. The essays speak to each other in ways that will greatly enhance the teaching, study, and practice of contextual pastoral care and counseling with a focus on Africa and the African Diaspora experiences.-- --J. Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu, PhD, Baeta-Grau Professor of Contemporary African Christianity and Pentecostal Theology, Trinity Theological Seminary, Ghana Tapiwa N. Mucherera is Professor of Pastoral Care and Counseling, Asbury Theological Seminary, and the author of three books: Glimmers of Hope (2013), Meet me at the Palaver (2009), Pastoral Care from a Third World Perspective (2001). Emmanuel Y. Lartey is the L. Bevel Jones III Professor of Pastoral Theology, Care and Counseling in the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. He is the author of In Living Color: An Intercultural Approach to Pastoral Care and Counseling (2003).

Leading pastoral theologians explore a wide variety of themes related to pastoral practice. Pastoral Theology and Care: Critical Trajectories in Theory and Practice offers a collection of essays by leading pastoral theologians that represent emerging trajectories in the fields of pastoral theology and care. The topics explored include: qualitative research and ethnography, advances in neuroscience, care across pluralities and intersections in religion and spiritualties, the influence of neoliberal economics in socio-economic vulnerabilities, postcolonial theory and its implications, the intersections of race and religion in caring for black women, and the usefulness of intersectionality for pastoral practice. Each of the essays offers a richly illustrated review of a practice of pastoral care relationally and in the public domain. The contributions to this volume engage seven critical directions emerging in the literature of pastoral theology in the United States and internationally among pastoral and practical theologians. While coverage of these topics does not exhaust important points of activity in the field, it does represent especially promising resources for theory and practice. This important work: Offers unique coverage of new directions in the field Includes contributions from an exceptional group of experts who are noted leaders in their areas of study Introduces the newest perspectives on pastoral care and offers constructive proposals Filled with case illustrations that make chapters pedagogically useful, Pastoral Theology and Care is essential reading for faculty, seminarians and students in advanced degree programs, and pastors.

Practical theology has outgrown its traditional pastoral paradigm. The articles in this handbook recognize that faith, spirituality, and lived religion, within and beyond institutional communities, refer to realms of cultures, ritual practices, and symbolic orders, whose boundaries are not clearly defined and whose contents are shifting. The International Handbook of Practical Theology offers insightful transcultural conceptions of religion and religious matters gathered from various cultures and traditions of faith. The first section presents ‘concepts of religion’. Chapters have to do with considerations of the conceptualizing of religion in the fields of ‘anthropology’, ‘community’, ‘family’, ‘institution’, ‘law’, ‘media’, and ‘politics’ among others. The second section is dedicated to case studies of ‘religious practices’ from the perspective of their actors. The third section presents major theoretical discourses that explore the globally significant diversity and multiplicity of religion. Altogether, sixty-one authors from different parts of the world encourage a rethinking of religious practice in an expanded, transcultural, globalized, and postcolonial world.
