Meet Me at the Palaver makes the case for a particular approach to pastoral counseling as a response to the destructive impact of colonial Christianity on indigenous African communities. The book opens with stories of destructive change brought to indigenous contexts (such as Zimbabwe, Africa), wherein the culture, values, religion, and humanity of African peoples were often marginalized. Mucherera demonstrates that therapy or counseling as taught in the West will not always suffice in such contexts, since these approaches tend to promote and focus on individuality, autonomy, and independence. Counselors in indigenous contexts need to get off their couch or chair and into the neighborhoods--into those places made vulnerable to disease and poverty by the collapse of the palaver and other traditional institutions of social stability. Since storytelling was at the heart of the practices of the palaver and continues to be a way of life in African cultures, Mucherera argues for a holistic narrative pastoral counseling approach to assess and service the three basic areas of human needs in indigenous African communities: body, mind, and spirit.

Pastoral counselling has in recent years become a highly specialized activity in Western (especially American) society, informed largely by scientific psychology. The actual practice of pastoral counselling in any society brings out tensions in theology, psychology and culture. This book proposes an inter-cultural approach to pastoral counselling which draws on the culture, values, beliefs and views of the people themselves. Some views of human life prevailing in southern Ghana are examined and their import for Christian theology is expressed. Proposals of the essentials of an authentic Ghanaian Christian view of persons are made. There is then an investigation of the assumptions of two forms of western psychotherapy, namely Gestalt therapy and Family therapy, from an African perspective. Comparative case studies of a Ghanaian indigenous church with branches in Britain and U.S.A. and a British urban church with a counselling ministry are also given.

The coming of Colonization and Christianity to Africa and other indigenous cross-cultural contexts was a ""mixed bag"" of pros and cons. The impact of the advent of the two has had a lasting effect being felt even today. It created issues of bi-culturalism and bi-religiousness in personal and religious identities that counselors and the church need to address when working with people from these contexts. There is the existence of deep cultural trauma (including psychological and spiritual scars) needing healing for those living in most of these post-colonial contexts. The Western counseling approaches and Christian rituals need contextualization. A counselor or pastoral caregiver with an integrative consciousness is required to address the psychological and religious identity conflicts existing in African and other indigenous cross-cultural contexts. ""Mucherera has identified counseling and pastoral care issues within the African Shona and other indigenous contexts with which individuals and families are struggling after generations of the advent of Christianity and colonization. His analysis of the impact of colonization and Christianity in post-colonial indigenous contexts is one of the best I have read. . . . In his book, Mucherera offers clear guidelines for counselors and pastors struggling with, and needing insight in, providing counseling and care. A must read for those serving individuals and families from and/or in post-colonial indigenous contexts."" --Bertha M. Mucherera, Director of Kids Parenting Forever ""Since I met Tapiwa Mucherera while he was in seminary, he has been fascinated with the idea of how western healing therapeutic practices could be suited to an African context. Due to his interest as a scholar and practitioner, he has found a way to contextualize western healing therapeutic practices with African cultural healing practices. His work represents how cross-cultural pastoral therapeutic and healing practices can work together to facilitate therapeutic and healing practices in an African context."" --Edward P. Wimberly, Professor of Pastoral Care and Counseling Tapiwa N. Mucherera is Professor of Pastoral Counseling at Asbury Theological Seminary. He is author of Meet Me at the Palaver and Glimmers of Hope. He is editor of Pastoral Care, Health, Healing, and Wholeness in African Contexts: Methodology, Context, and Issues, and has also contributed chapters to several academic books. An ordained United Methodist Church (UMC) pastor, he has served several churches in Zimbabwe, Iowa, Denver, and Kentucky. Mucherera is serving on the Board of Ordained Ministry of the Florida UMC Annual Conference, and serves on the ACPE National Board.

""Mucherera tactfully captures the lost art of storytelling as a mode of communication for therapy and moral values. Though commonly used by indigenous Africans to transmit oral traditions, the narrative approach is a unique tool that creates safe distance for the care receiver and offers ample opportunity to the caregiver to non-judgmentally form an uplifting and therapeutic relationship. This book is a must read for all pastoral caregivers, pastors, counselors, and ministry students, since the narrative approach is an effective communication tool in today's cross cultural world."" Anne Kiome Gatobu, Assistant Professor of Pastoral Care, Asbury Theological Seminary ""The impact of Western colonialism's attempt to extinguish indigenous peoples' stories, communities, value systems, and culture--recruiting them into negative identities through colonial strategies--has crippled, for example, African people's ability to face many contemporary problems such as poverty and the HIV/AIDS pandemic. This book presents a hopeful strategy of recovering stories, cultural traditions, and values that have been subjugated in the past as effective means for dealing with contemporary life in indigenous contexts such as Zimbabwe. This narrative pastoral counseling approach is based on traditional African wisdom as well as the knowledge growing out of the author's pastoral counseling experience in Africa and the United States. The author challenges dangerous traditional practices in the age of HIV/AIDS, and the need for justice for the poor. A must read for those interested in working with indigenous peoples."" Edward P. This book is an edited volume of works that have predominated over the past several decades in contemporary pastoral theology. Through the writings of nineteen leading voices in the history of pastoral care, Dykstra shows how each contributor developed a metaphor for understanding pastoral care. Such metaphors include the solicitous shepherd, the wounded healer, the intimate stranger, the midwife, and other tangible images. Through these works, the reader gains a sense of the varied identities of pastoral care professionals, their struggles for recognition in this often controversial field, and insight into the history of the disciple. Includes readings by: Anton T. Boisen, Alastair V. Campbell, Donald Capps, James E. Dittes, Robert C. Dykstra, Heije Faber, Charles V. Gerkin, Brita L. Gill-Austern, Karen R. Hanson, Seward Hiltner, Margaret Zipse Kornfeld, Bonnie J. Miller-McLemore, Jeanne Stevenson Moessner, Henri J. M. Nouwen, Gaylord Noyce, Paul W. Pruyser, Edward P. Wimberly.
