Catherine Meeks shares the wisdom she has garnered over the journey of her life, from her father’s sharecropping fields to the academy and beyond. Today, Catherine Meeks is a national leader of racial healing and an esteemed retired professor of African American studies. But being a Black woman in America can be difficult. Join Meeks as she describes the adventures and adversity she encountered on her path to becoming an empowered voice for change. Growing up in Arkansas under the terror of Jim Crow, Meeks learned firsthand about injustice and the desperation it causes. But with the support of her family, she moved to LA to study at Pepperdine. When a Black teenager was killed by a campus security guard, Meeks awakened to her prophetic voice, and a local women’s group gave her hope that racial reconciliation was possible. She later led a group of students to West Africa, where she met her husband. Yet her years-long battle with rheumatoid arthritis severed their relationship, leaving her a single mother. Meanwhile, she worked tirelessly at Mercer University to expand the African American studies program, all while earning her MSW and PhD. Quilting together these memories—bitter and sweet, traumatic and triumphant—Meeks shares her hard-earned wisdom: Learn how to discern the Creator’s work. Listen to the voice saying “yes” to opportunity. Become a wounded healer. Know when to practice silence and when to speak out. Readers will leave the pages of A Quilted Life enriched by Meeks’s unique perspective and insight.

I am a Patchwork Quilt is a compilation of writings of the nouns (names of people, places and things) that touched the life of the author, Ana Maria Ward, formerly an English teacher. While writing her first novel, a biography about her father, Gordon F. Ward, Uncommon Survivor: from Sand to Bronze, the author became inspired with the idea to write about those people who touched her life in the places where she lived from her birth to the present. Although her father was ill, he read some of the first chapters, or "patches," and encouraged her to continue with her theme during the final days of his life. He approved the concept of the author as the quilt made up of patches representing everyone involved in her life. Some of them were linked to him. Determined to please her father, the author wanted I am a Patchwork Quilt to be an uplifting experience for her readers. Related to the "degrees of separation," each person or "patch" has a unique relationship to the author and as in life, some with seriousness and some with humor. In reality, every person is unique and relationships are unique. The patches in I Am a Patchwork Quilt are connected to the reader in various amusing ways. The reader may laugh, the reader may cry, but the reader will be moved to find that around the world people will feel warm when magically involved in the blanket of love.

On the seventh day, God rested. God was still. In stillness, God blessed his creations. Psalm 100:3 - Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Have you ever walked on a sandy beach searching for a perfect conch shell? The one you hold up to your ear to hear the relaxing ocean waves rolling to the shore. Without God, we would not have pebbles and stepping stones to trod, nor beautiful seashells to seek and find. God placed his love in the sand, in the seas, in the skies, in valleys, in mountainsEverywhere. Do you sense Him? Be Still the Dawn takes you on a journey to feel and know Gods presence. Through poetic devotions, you are invited to be still and hear Gods calling. His whispers are as sweet and soothing as the wonderful message heard inside a conch shell. Be still and know Jesus. He is with you in your hurting and happy place. That place is all one in the same; it just feels different at different times. Let Jesus dwell in your heart as you experience your gift of life. Be Still the Dawn also invites you to be still and to know yourself and others more deeply. It instills principles of faith, hope, and love to improve your quality of life and relationships with others. Are you ready to be still and take an inspirational journey? Inspirational. Motivational. Poetic. Making Choices in Gods Wilderness. Experiencing Growth in Green Pastures and Still Waters.
