In 1910, Bertha Jaques co-founded the Chicago Society of Etchers and helped launch a revival of American fine art printmaking. In the decades following, women artists produced some of the most compelling images in U.S. printmaking history and helped advance the medium technically and stylistically. Paths to the Press examines American women artists' contributions to printmaking in the U.S. during the early to mid twentieth century. The product of fieldwork extending over a thirty-year period, Paths and Rivers offers an unusually deep and broad picture of the Sa'dan Toraja as a society in dynamic transition over the course of the 20th century. The Toraja inhabit the mountainous highlands of South Sulawesi, Indonesia, and are well known for their dramatic architecture, their unusual cliff burials, and their flamboyant ceremonies, which place extraordinary economic demands on individuals and families. A comparative perspective sets Toraja structure in the context of the Austronesian world, but the author also delves deeply into Toraja social memory to show how people think about their past, and to examine the usefulness of history and myth as a source of identity, a template for action, or a resource for claiming presence. The book gives a clear picture of the structure and ethos of the indigenous Toraja religion, the Aluk To Dolo or 'Way of the Ancestors', with its complex cycle of rituals. As more and more people convert to Christianity, Aluk To Dolo is in increasingly rapid decline; yet, certain Toraja rituals, especially mortuary rites and those that celebrate the rebuilding of origin houses, continue vigorously in Christianized forms. The book concludes with an analysis of the ceremonial economy, which draws upon both domestic and subsistence production and the global market economy. The 'Toraja' ethnic identity emerged during the past century as a response to far-reaching social changes initiated by the Dutch colonial regime and accelerated through ensuing regime changes and political developments, culminating in the effervescent mood of 'Reformation' since Soeharto's fall from power in 1998. In tracing these transformations, Paths and Rivers draws together a fascinating picture of one society's journey into modernity.

A groundbreaking account of the meaning of abstract painting From Mondrian's bold geometric forms to Kandinsky's use of symbols to Pollock's "dripped paintings," the richly diverse movement of abstract painting challenges anyone trying to make sense of either individual works or the phenomenon as a whole. Applying his insights as an art historian and a painter, John Golding offers a unique approach to understanding the evolution of abstractionism by looking at the personal artistic development of seven of its greatest practitioners. He re-creates the journey undertaken by each painter in his move from representational art to the abstract—a journey that in most cases began with cubism but led variously to symbolism, futurism, surrealism, theosophy, anthropology, Jungian analysis, and beyond. For each artist, spiritual quest and artistic experimentation became inseparable. And despite their different techniques and philosophies, these artists shared one goal: to break a path to a new, ultimate pictorial truth. The book first explores the works and concerns of three pioneering European abstract painters—Mondrian, Malevich, Kandinsky—and then those of their American successors—Pollock, Newman, Rothko, and Still. Golding shows how each painter sought to see the world and communicate his vision in the purest or most expressive form possible. For example, Mondrian found his way into abstraction through a spiritual response to the landscape of his native Holland, Malevich through his apprehension of the human body, Kandinsky through a blend of religious mysticism and symbolism. Line and color became the focus for many of their creative endeavors. In the 1940s and 50s, the Americans raised the level of pictorial innovation, beginning most notably with Pollock and his Jung-inspired concept of action. Thereafter, it dances back and forth in place and time between an array of obscurely connected walks that Roy has undertaken over the years. Among the book's many characters and diversions are Wetherspoons, Capt. Picard, the Navy Cut sailor, the buried 'Spirit of Brighton', Wendy Craig, Harrods, Buddhism's Six Realms of Desire, 'Things to Do...' tourist brochures, Argleton redux, the abyss, strip-lynchets, punk residues, Milton Keynes, multiple identities and an inkling of what the future may hold for thoughtful walkers.Each chapter starts with a quote from Phil Smith's Mythogeography, specifically from the 'Legend' given in that book - 'legend' as in a set of definitions of symbols used on maps to define landscape features. Roy uses these symbols to organise the book. The main body of each chapter is an account of a walking journey he has done. These are not chronological: structuring the book around the mythogeography Legend has (dis)organised the walks into a sequence that wanders in and out of time. Towards the end of each chapter, Roy reflects on a Landscape Feature that corresponds to the Legend - exploring the workability (or playability) of mythogeographical concepts and illustrating how they have manifested in his own walking. Finally, the Jump Over the Back Fence notes in each chapter suggest further actual walks which readers could make.
