Chapter Six introduces an explanatory Chain-of Response Model for motivation for adult learning. The remainder of the book is devoted to an examination of what and how adults learn with focus on the learning process as a function of aging, adult stages of development, phases of the life cycle, and teaching methods and practice. A second major explanatory model is presented in Chapter Nine where a conceptual framework for analyzing the interactions between learners and their environments is presented.

Adult Learning and Education The graduate student guide in adult education explores theories of adult learning and adult education participation. It provides a frame of reference for understanding the development of a rapidly evolving field and for enhancing knowledge and competencies in this professional domain. The publication is divided into two sections: a section on adult learning theories and a section on adult education participation theories. If Adult Learning and Education (ALE) is now a recognised professional field, the theoretical perspectives, underlying practices and policies draw on a variety of academic disciplines. Various theories of learning and of adult education participation shape the practice and the “engineering” of adult learning. In the first section, this study guide provides a review of the most important learning theories, including behaviourist, cognitive, and constructivist approaches, their modern development, as well as specific developments in adult education theory. The second section examines the psychological and sociological theoretical backgrounds of adult education participation in order to understand the factors at work in participation patterns along the adult life course and between different social contexts. Observing the relativity of social reproduction allows to identify the conditions and variables that need to be addressed in order to alter prevailing trends.

This book examines the experiences of adult learners in times of austerity. The power of adult education to transform lives is well known, and it is especially powerful for those who missed out on educational opportunities earlier in life. Those who have been successful learners in the past are more likely to continue their education and training, making extra support and funding ever-more important: however, in the current economic and political climate, support for adult learning is significantly decreasing. This book sheds light on the experiences of adult learners, despite the difficulties facing the sector: interweaving empirical discussions with theoretical debates, the editors and contributors demonstrate the challenges and struggles of adult learners in higher, further and community education. This enlightening edited collection will be of interest to all those involved in adult education as well as policy makers and funders.

Participation of U.S. adults in formal learning activities during the 1990s was examined by analyzing data from the 1991, 1995, and 1999 Adult Education Surveys that were part of the National Household Education Surveys Program. Overall, participation in adult education between 1991 and 1999 increased among all but one age group (35-44 years), all racial/ethnic groups, all education levels, all labor force groups, and all occupation groups (except those.in professional or managerial positions). The groups that did not increase their participation rates had some of the highest participation rates in 1991 and constant rates of participation thereafter. However, more in-depth statistical analyses revealed that participation in work-related courses by Hispanics, individuals with lower levels of education, individuals with lower-status jobs, and individuals who are employed part time is lower than that of other groups. Adults with lower levels of education were also less likely to participate in nonwork-related courses, even after other factors were accounted for. Despite elimination of some inequalities, highly educated and high-status groups remained the main beneficiaries of adult education. A discussion of the survey methodology and data reliability is appended along with nine standard error and logistic regression tables. (Contains 48 references and 27 tables/figures.).

Formation Of Adult Learning Systems In Central Europe written by Jan Kalenda and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024 with Adult education categories.

This book explores the formation and development of the cross-national patterns of adult learning systems between 1989 and 2019 in four Central European countries: the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Poland. Drawing on the approach of the political economy of adult education and historical institutionalism, the book closely examines (1) how the institutional settings in these countries have formed, evolved and contributed to overall participation in adult education and training, (2) how they have shaped patterns of participation and unequal chances to be involved in this social activity, as well as (3) perceived barriers to access organized learning and related governmental policies. This book offers a contemporary overview of key findings regarding adult learning systems. It delves into the factors that influence participation in adult education and training. Through the utilization of the novel framework, GALS (Global Adult Learning Space), the book not only highlights a crucial distinction among adult learning systems within the region but also presents in-depth case studies of these systems in Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Slovakia spanning a 30-year period. Despite these countries sharing similar institutional backgrounds and societal challenges, the book reveals that their adult learning systems have undergone divergent trajectories over the past three decades. This book will be useful to researchers and scholars in the fields of adult education, comparative education, welfare policy, sociology of education, and European studies.
