Sexual arousal is category-specific in men. Heterosexual men are more aroused by female than by male sexual stimuli and homosexual men show the opposite pattern. There is reason to believe that female sexual arousal is differently organized, however. My master's research showed that women have nonspecific genital and subjective arousal patterns. I conducted three studies to further examine whether female sexual arousal is category-specific. The first examined the arousal patterns of gay and heterosexual men to compare men and women using the same methodology and stimuli, and to determine whether the stimuli were capable of eliciting a category-specific response pattern. In the second study, I examined whether the nonspecific sexual arousal patterns obtained in a community sample of women were attributable to ascertainment bias. For the third study, I examined both men and women's arousal to nonhuman sexual stimuli to determine whether women's genital arousal could be provoked by general sexual cues. In the first study, men showed the predicted category-specific pattern of genital and subjective arousal. The second study showed that the nonspecific patterns of community women are unlikely due to ascertainment bias. In the third study, women demonstrated significant genital, but not subjective, arousal to nonhuman sexual stimuli. These findings suggest that sexual arousal play a fundamentally different role in male and female sexuality.

Four topics have dominated sexual research on men since the pioneering research of Kinsey and his colleagues in the 1950s: 1)sexual behaviours men engage in, 2) sexual orientation, 3) erectile functioning, 4) treatment issues for sex offenders and men with paraphilic behaviours. Though related to all these topics, the nature of sexual arousal itself and patterns that may develop in sexual arousal have rarely been studied. This thesis investigated conceptualisations, interpretations, experiences and changes regarding sexual arousal of men aged 18 to 25 years, to facilitate the development of grounded theory of male sexual arousal. Men in this study were not chosen from a clinical population but through volunteer participation from advertisements. Within the criteria or self reporting, they did not have sex offending or paraphilic sexual behaviours or arousal. The results indicate that the participants developed patterns in their sexual arousal that were based on key components related to their control of emotions, thoughts, physiological changes, behaviours and how their arousal was congruent to their concept of self. From these key components and further analysis of the patterns, a core component of sexual arousal was discovered: 'Self constructed situational alignment of physical, emotional and cognitive states to validate self'. It is anticipated that this grounded theory of male sexual arousal will be of benefit to further research that investigates normative male sexual arousal and that such investigations will provide essential information that will be of assistance to health professionals, school teachers, sexuality educators, parents, counsellors, researchers, and both men and women.
