Excerpt from Paul and Paulinism Genesis, says Tertullian in the fifth book of his treatise against Marcion, - Genesis promised me Paul long ago. For, he adds (playing upon a Latin rendering of Genesis xlix: 27), when Jacob was pronouncing typical and prophetic blessings over his sons, he turned to Benjamin and said, "Benjamin is a ravening wolf; in the morning he shall devour his prey, but towards evening he shall provide food." Excerpt from Paulinism, Vol. 1: A Contribution to the History of Primitive Christian Theology This work is intended as a contribution to the history of the primitive Christian theology, a portion of the history of early Christian dogma, not a biography of Paul, nor a critical introduction to Pauline literature, which forms the principal subject-matter of Baur's "Paul." The criticism of the Epistles is throughout presupposed, and is only treated of here where it is affected by questions of dogma. And the critical consideration of the Acts of the Apostles cannot, on this plan, be made the starting-point, but must be introduced at the conclusion; since this document can in nowise serve as the source of the Pauline theology, hut rather as a test of the correctness of the view taken of the development of Pauline doctrine after the time of Paul. Much has been done in late years to elucidate Pauline theology, especially by the able investigations of Dr. Holsten, which have been of the greatest assistance to me in this work, and indeed first set me upon it. Excerpt from Paul and His Epistles WE have called this book Paul and His Epistles, but it might be Paul in His Epistles just as well, for the book aims to be not only an Introduction to the Pauline Epistles but also a Study of the Personality of the Apostle Paul as revealed in them. They are fragments of his life. They are all autobiographical in character. They ought not to be read as treatises in theology, for none of them was intended to be merely theological. They ought to be recognized as the products of personal experience. They ought not to be pre sented dry as dust and dead as a doornail. They are full of vitality. They were written to meet the real needs of real people, and they were written by a man who wore his heart on his sleeve and who never dictated a letter without putting himself wholly and unreservedly into it. We shall endeavor to make this apostle and the peoples to whom he ministered in these epistles live again in these pages, being assured that if we succeed in any measure, we only shall bring to light the life and immortality which has be longed to them by right from the beginning. Excerpt from Studies of Paul and His Gospel These Studies have appeared in the pages of The Expositor, and are reprinted with the kind per mission of the Editor. The intention is not to give an exhaustive or systematic account of Paul's theology, but to present the man and his message as distinctly as the writer himself has been im pressed by them. In one oi the Century Bible Handbooks, published by Messrs. T. C. E. C. Jack, the writer has already dealt with The Life and Teaching of Paul; but necessarily in the briefest possible way. In this volume he attempts to discuss in greater detail, with more constant reference to modern difficulties, the main features of Paul's Gospel. While not unacquainted with what scholars have written on the theme, he has not thought it necessary or desirable to confuse the reader by the reproduction of a mass of con flicting Opinion; but having gone to the sources. Excerpt from Paul in Everyday Life There were divisions in the Church. Some were for Paul, others for Apollos, others for Peter, and yet others for Christ. That is to say, some of the members of the Corin thian Church were tempted to lose sight of Christ, in their enthusiasm for preachers; while some others were tempted to have contempt for preachers in their possession of Christ. These two temptations are with us still, All divisions among Christians are based upon false emphasis. Saint Paul did not minimize the importance of baptism. He simply was careful to keep the emphasis of his ministry in line with the mind of Christ. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
