PAUL BOURGET (1852-1935). Poète, romancier, critique, il a collaboré à la Revue des Deux Mondes, au Globe, à la Nouvelle Revue, à L'Illustration et divers autres journaux et revues. Ses Poésies ont été publiées en deux volumes; ses principaux romans sont: Cruelle Énigme, André Cornélis, Un Crime d'amour, Mensonges, La Terre promise, Cosmopolis et Outre-Mer. Paul Bourget a écrit aussi de nombreux recueils de nouvelles, genre dans lequel son art est plus à l'aise: L'Irréparable (1884), Pastels (1889), Un scrupule (1893), Recommencements (1897), Complications sentimentales (1898), Drames de famille (1900), Un homme d'affaires (1900), Monique (1902), L'Eau profonde (1903), Les Deux Soeurs (1905), Les Détours du coeur (1908), L'Envers du décor (1911), Anomalies (1920) notamment. Paul Bourget a appliqué ses facultés d'analyse à quelques-uns des principaux penseurs ou écrivains de son siècle (Renan, Baudelaire, Flaubert, Stendhal, Taine) dans ses Essais de psychologie contemporaine (1883), suivis de Nouveaux-Essais (1885) et Etudes et Portraits (1888, 2 vol.). On distingue traditionnellement deux périodes dans l'oeuvre littéraire de Paul Bourget: avant et après son retour au catholicisme (il se convertit en 1901), ce retour s'effectuant progressivement dans les années 1890. Les transformations intérieures de l'écrivain sont perceptibles dans ses lettres et son Journal intime ou l'inquiétude morale et religieuse est visible à tout instant. Il adopte sincèrement les opinions conservatrices de Taine et de Balzac . Un roman significatif de sa conversion définitive au catholicisme, peut-être son chef-d'oeuvre selon Henry Bordeaux, est L'Échéance, paru en 1900. Paul Bourget a été élu à l'Académie le 31 mai 1894 en remplacement de Maxime du Camp, et reçu le 13 juin 1895 par le vicomte E.-Melchior de Vogüé.
