Die Studie befasst sich mit Paul Celans Prosatext »Gespräch im Gebirg«. Ausgangspunkt bildet Celans Bemerkung in der Büchnerpreisrede, er habe den Text »in Erinnerung an eine versäumte Begegnung« geschrieben. Die Formulierung wird auf ihre historischen, biographischen und insbesondere auf ihre poetologischen Implikationen hin befragt. Die Studie prüft kritisch die gängige Interpretation, nach der Celan im Text eine versäumte Begegnung mit Theodor W. Adorno nachhole. Durch minutiöse Lektüre, poetologische Analyse, intertextuellen Vergleich mit Texten Adornos und Einbezug von z.T. erst kürzlich veröffentlichten Briefen gelingt es ihr, ein genaues Bild der ästhetischen Gemeinsamkeiten und Differenzen von Adorno und Celan vor dem Hintergrund der zeitgenössischen Diskussion um Adornos »Lyrikverdikt« zu zeichnen. Die Differenzen betreffen dabei insbesondere die Beziehung zum Judentum und den Stellenwert, den es für das ästhetische Denken spielt. Durch die Erhellung des poetologischen Gehalts der Bemerkung stößt die Studie zu einem neuen Verständnis des Prosatexts vor und kann ihn gegenüber Celans Gedichten und deren Poetik profilieren.

"Gespräch im Gebirg" (1960) is a brief prose work on a meeting between two Jews who (according to Celan himself) represent Celan and Theodor Adorno. (Both vacationed with their wives in the Swiss resort Sils Maria in the summer of 1959, but at different times, so that Sieber sees no grounds for speculations that in reality they could have met but that Celan intentionally avoided the meeting.) Interprets the story sentence by sentence, commenting that it begins in an ironic, somewhat antisemitic tone and develops into an emotional monologue by the figure representing Celan on the meaning for him of Jewish identity and tradition after the Holocaust. Discusses the intention of Adorno's dictum that "to write lyrics after the Holocaust is barbaric", which seems to contradict Celan's Holocaust poetry. Argues that for Celan this poetry is legitimate because it is anchored in personal experience, in specific dates and places - elements lacking in Adorno's thought. Indeed, Adorno seems not to have understood the "Gespräch".

"Paul Celan (1920-1970), one of the most important and challenging poets in post-war Europe, was also a prolific and highly idiosyncratic translator. His post-Holocaust writing is inextricably linked to the specific experiences that have shaped contemporary European and American identity, and at the same time has its roots in literary, philosophical and scientific traditions that range across continents and centuries surrealism being a key example. Celan's early works emerge from a fruitful period for surrealism, and they bear the marks of that style, not least because of the deep affinity he felt with the need to extend the boundaries of expression. In this comparative and intertextual study, Charlotte Ryland shows that this interaction continued throughout Celans lifetime, largely through translation of French surrealist poems, and that Celans great oeuvre can thus be understood fully only in the light of its interaction with surrealist texts and artworks, which finally gives rise to a wholly new poetics of translation. Originally published in in 2004. What, at this historical moment "after Auschwitz," still remains of the questions traditionally asked by theology? What now is theology's minimal degree? This magisterial study, the first extended comparison of the writings of Theodor W. Adorno and Emmanuel Levinas, explores remnants and echoes of religious forms in these thinkers' critiques of secular reason, finding in the work of both a "theology in pianissimo" constituted by the trace of a transcendent other. The author analyzes, systematizes, and formalizes this idea of an other of reason. In addition, he frames these thinkers' innovative projects within the arguments of such intellectual heirs as Jürgen Habermas and Jacques Derrida, defending their work against later accusations of "performative contradiction" (by Habermas) or "empiricism" (by Derrida) and in the process casting important new light on those later writers as well. Attentive to rhetorical and rational features of Adorno's and Levinas's texts, his investigations of the concepts of history, subjectivity, and language in their writings provide a radical interpretation of their paradoxical modes of thought and reveal remarkable and hitherto unsuspected parallels between their philosophical methods, parallels that amount to a plausible way of overcoming certain impasses in contemporary philosophical thinking. In Adorno, this takes the form of a dialectical critique of dialectics; in Levinas, that of a phenomenological critique of phenomenology, each of which sheds new light on ancient and modern questions of metaphysics, ethics, and aesthetics. For the English-language publication, the author has extensively revised and updated the prize-winning German version.

Writing the Mountains reconsiders the role of mountains in German language fiction from 1800 to the present and argues that in a range of texts, from E.T.A. Hoffmann's “Die Bergwerke zu Falun” (1819) to Elfriede Jelinek's Die Kinder der Toten (1995) and beyond, mountains serve as dynamic spaces of material change that generate aesthetic and narrative innovation. In contrast to dominant critical approaches to the Alpine landscape in literature, in which mountain ranges often features as passive settings, or which trace the influence of geographical and geological sciences in literary productions, this study argues for the dynamic role in literature of presumably rigid mineral structures. In German-language fiction after 1800, the counter-intuitive topology of rocky mountain ranges and unfathomable subterranean depths of the Alpine imaginary functions as a space of exception which appears to reconfirm and radically challenge the foundations of Enlightenment thought. Writing the Mountains reads the mountain range as a rigid yet permeable liminal space. Within this zone, semiotic orders are unsettled, as is the division between organic and inorganic, between the human and the other.

Paul Celan's works dwell on the threshold between the extremes of poetic expression and philosophical reflection. The divergent literary and critical idioms that have marked Celan's writing—and that Celan's writing has come to mark for others (Hamacher, Derrida, Szondi)—thus call for a new philology. This philology cannot be situated within presupposed genres or fields but rather explores the ways in which poetic and philosophical ambitions meet in texts by, and on, Celan. The first part of Thresholds, Encounters ("Ex-posing the Poem") speaks to issues of history, ecology, and aurality; the second part ("Language Dislodged") delves into Celan's articulations of encounter, positionality, and translation. The rootless Jew, wandering disconnected from history, homeland, and nature, was often the target of early twentieth-century nationalist rhetoric aimed against modern culture. But following World War II, a number of prominent French philosophers recast this maligned figure in positive terms, and in so doing transformed postwar conceptions of politics and identity. Sarah Hammerschlag explores this figure of the Jew from its prewar usage to its resuscitation by Jean-Paul Sartre, Emmanuel Levinas, Maurice Blanchot, and Jacques Derrida. Sartre and Levinas idealized the Jew’s rootlessness in order to rethink the foundations of political identity. Blanchot and Derrida, in turn, used the figure of the Jew to call into question the very nature of group identification. By chronicling this evolution in thinking, Hammerschlag ultimately reveals how the figural Jew can function as a critical mechanism that exposes the political dangers of mythic allegiance, whether couched in universalizing or particularizing terms. Both an intellectual history and a philosophical argument, The Figural Jew will set the agenda for all further consideration of Jewish identity, modern Jewish thought, and continental philosophy.
