Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2015 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Neuere Deutsche Literatur, Note: 1,7, Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel (NDL), Veranstaltung: Hermenetik, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Das Gedicht "Todesfuge" von Paul Celan, verfasst 1948, handelt von seiner unmittelbaren Erfahrung mit dem deutschen Antisemitismus. Um sein bedeutendstes Werk hinreichend bearbeiten zu können, empfiehlt es sich zunächst das Leben des Autors näher zu betrachten. Paul Celan gehört zu den wichtigsten deutschsprachigen Lyrikern der Nachkriegszeit. Der Verfasser, 1920 im heutigen Rumänien in Czernowitz geboren, stammte aus einer ostjüdischen Familie und war mit der deutschen Sprache und Kultur von Kindheit an vertraut. Zu den prägendsten Ereignissen nach Beginn des Zweiten Weltkrieges gehörten die Internierung im Ghetto 1941 und der Aufenthalt 1943 in einem Arbeitslager, zudem wurden seine Eltern deportiert und starben beide in einem deutschen Konzentrationslager. Sein dichterisches Werk spiegelt diese Erlebnisse wieder und stellt auch eine Art der Verarbeitung der Begegnungen mit dem Antisemitismus dar. Celan selbst hat sich nie weitergehend dazu geäußert wann und wo die Todesfuge entstanden ist. Die heutige Forschung vermutet aber, dass sie um 1944 in Czernowitz geschrieben worden ist, jedoch 1945 in Bukarest vollendet wurde. Das Gedicht wurde erstmals in rumänischer Fassung unter dem Namen "Tangoul Mortii" veröffentlicht. Die i-Punkte wurden durch zwei Hakenkreuze dargestellt. "Tangoul Mortii" wurde aus dem Rumänischen mit Todestango übersetzt und später von Celan in "Todesfuge" geändert. Die musikalische Anlehnung des Titels begründet Celan damit, dass er einen Artikel gelesen habe, der über Juden berichtete, die in einem Konzentrationslager Tanzmusik spielen mussten. Das Gedicht begleitete ihn auf seinen Lesungen, doch seit der sechziger Jahre liest er es immer seltener.

Peter Szondi's Celan Studies marked the beginning of critical work on Paul Celan, the most important German poet of the second half of the twentieth century. The book's three studies each concentrate on a different Celan poem. "The Poetry of Constancy: Paul Celan's Translation of Shakespeare's Sonnet 105" investigates a historical turn from a poetry that claims to present its object to a poetry that only promises to do so. "Reading 'Engführung'" follows the movement of poetic language into territory undisclosed to epistemic reason. "Eden" addresses "Du liegst," a poem on the murder of Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht; Szondi actually was with Celan when the poem was written. It analyzes the relation between the historical facts to which a poem refers and its composition. The book contains, as appendixes, Szondi's notes for three more projected studies of Celan poems, left unwritten at the time of his death in 1971.

In Lyric Orientations, Hannah Vandegrift Eldridge explores the power of lyric poetry to stir the social and emotional lives of human beings in the face of the ineffable nature of our mortality. She focuses on two German-speaking masters of lyric prose and poetry: Friedrich Hölderlin (1770–1843) and Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926). While Hölderlin and Rilke are stylistically very different, each believes in the power of poetic language to orient us as social beings in contexts that otherwise can be alienating. They likewise share the conviction that such alienation cannot be overcome once and for all in any universal event. Both argue that to deny the uncertainty created by the absence of any such event (or to deny the alienation itself) is likewise to deny the particularly human condition of uncertainty and mortality. By drawing on the work of Stanley Cavell, who explores how language in all its formal aspects actually enables us to engage meaningfully with the world, Eldridge challenges poststructuralist scholarship, which stresses the limitations—even the failure—of language in the face of reality. Eldridge provides detailed readings of Hölderlin and Rilke and positions them in a broader narrative of modernity that helps make sense of their difficult and occasionally contradictory self-characterizations. Her account of the orienting and engaging capabilities of language reconciles the extraordinarily ambitious claims that Hölderlin and Rilke make for poetry—that it can create political communities, that it can change how humans relate to death, and that it can unite the sensual and intellectual components of human subjectivity—and the often difficult, fragmented, or hermetic nature of their individual poems.

This work explores the troubled relationship and unfinished intellectual dialogue between Paul Celan, regarded by many as the most important European poet after 1945, and Martin Heidegger, perhaps the most influential figure in twentieth-century philosophy. It centers on the persistent ambivalence Celan, a Holocaust survivor, felt toward a thinker who respected him and at times promoted his poetry. Celan, although strongly affected by Heidegger's writings, struggled to reconcile his admiration of Heidegger's ideas on literature with his revulsion at the thinker's Nazi past. That Celan and Heidegger communicated with each other over a number of years, and in a controversial encounter, met in 1967, is well known. The full duration, extent, and nature of their exchanges and their impact on Celan's poetics has been less understood, however. In the first systematic analysis of their relationship between 1951 and 1970, James K. Lyon describes how the poet and the philosopher read and responded to each other's work throughout the period. He offers new information about their interactions before, during, and after their famous 1967 meeting at Todtnauberg. He suggests that Celan, who changed his account of that meeting, may have contributed to misreadings of his poem "Todtnauberg." Finally, Lyon discusses their two last meetings after 1967 before the poet's death three years later. Drawing heavily on documentary material—including Celan's reading notes on more than two dozen works by Heidegger, the philosopher's written response to the poet's "Meridian" speech, and references to Heidegger in Celan's letters—Lyon presents a focused perspective on this critical aspect of the poet's intellectual development and provides important insights into his relationship with Heidegger, transforming previous conceptions of it.
