Paul Tillich, der 1933 in die USA emigrieren musste, war einer der prominentesten deutschen Intellektuellen im Exil in den USA. Er engagierte sich nicht nur in der 1936 gegründeten einflussreichen Organisation "Selfhelp for Emigrees from Central Europe", dessen Vorsitzender er 15 Jahre lang war, er übernahm auch – nach der Absage von Thomas Mann – den Vorsitz des am 17. Juni 1944 gegründeten "Council for a Democratic Germany", der die unterschiedlichen politischen Gruppen der deutschen Emigranten zusammenführen sollte, um ein Programm für ein demokratisches Nachkriegsdeutschland zu entwickeln. Der Band "Paul Tillich im Exil" thematisiert erstmals den Exilanten Tillich vor dem Hintergrund neuer Quellen und unter Einbeziehung der Exilforschung. Auf diese Weise entsteht ein facettenreiches Bild der Netzwerke, in denen Tillich in dem für ihn neuen Wissenschaftsmilieu der USA seine Theologie und Philosophie ausarbeitete.

Ideocracies, or ideological dictatorships, such as the "Third Reich", the Soviet Union and the People’s Republic of China have, much more than any other kinds of autocracy, characterized the history of the 20th century. Despite their undeniable loss of significance, ideocracies have not disappeared from the world in the 21st century. This book explores the functioning of ideocracies and analyses the typical interplay of legitimation, co-optation and repression which autocratic elites use in an attempt to stabilize their rule. In the first part of the book, the contributors discuss the conceptual history of the ideocracy notion. The second part offers case studies pertaining to the Soviet State, Italy, the National Socialist Regime, the German Democratic Republic, the People’s Republic of China, North Korea and Cuba. Band XVII der Ergänzungs- und Nachlaßbände zu den Gesammelten Werken von Paul Tillich enthält drei bisher unbekannte Vorlesungen, die er in den ersten zwei Jahren seines Exils am Union Theological Seminary New York, an der Columbia University New York und an der Yale University New Haven gehalten hat. Es sind Vorlesungen über Religionsphilosophie (1934), Einführung in die Existential-Philosophie (1934) und die Lehre vom Menschen (1934-35). Sie dokumentieren den schwierigen Versuch eines deutschen Gelehrten, sein von der Philosophie des deutschen Idealismus, der Existenzphilosophie und der religiösen und politischen Situation in Deutschland geprägtes philosophisches und theologisches Denken einem amerikanischen akademischen Publikum nahe zu bringen. Pastor Tillich: The Justification of the Doubter tells the story of Paul Tillich's early theological development from his student days until the end of the First World War, set against the backdrop of church politics in Wilhelmine Germany and with particular reference to his early sermons. The majority of scholarship understands Tillich primarily as a philosophical theologian. But before and during the First World War, Tillich was Pastor Tillich, studying to become a pastor, leading a Christian student group, working periodically as a pastor in Berlin churches, and preaching to soldiers. Arriving in Berlin after the war, Tillich pursued religious socialism and a theology of culture through the 1920s. But the theological basis of these programmes was what Tillich considered his main concern in 1919: the theology of doubt. Using a wealth of untranslated German sources largely unknown to English-language scholarship, Pastor Tillich presents the stations of Tillich's theological development of the notion of the justification of the doubter up to 1919. Distinguishing between Tillich's later autobiographical statements and the witness of archival sources, a significantly original, contextualised account of Tillich's early life in Germany emerges. From his days as the conservative son of a conservative Lutheran pastor to the battle-worn chaplain who could even talk about 'faith without God', Tillich underwent considerable change. The book should therefore speak to any interested in the history of modern theology, as an example of how biography and theology are intertwined.
