Dabei möchte ich auch die gesellschaftlichen Hintergründe in Brasilien darstellen, die Freire zu seiner Alphabetisierungsarbeit angehalten haben. Grundlage dieser Arbeit war für Paulo Freire das „dialogische Prinzip“, das ein ebenbürtiges Verhältnis von Lehrer und Lernendem voraus setzt, sowie die Bewusstseinsbildung („Conscientizacao“), die auf die Befreiung von unterdrückerischen Verhältnissen aus sich selbst heraus abzielt. Er war der Meinung, dass man dies nur durch Alphabetisierung und Aufklärung erreichen könne und wird deshalb als Mahner für die soziale und politische Verantwortung der Wissenschaften und der Erziehung bezeichnet. Zahlreiche internationale pädagogische Institutionen tragen seinen Namen.

Durch seine «Pädagogik der Unterdrückten» wurde Paulo Freire (1921-1997) weltweit zum pädagogischen Klassiker und erzielte eine Millionenauflage. Freire steht für Gesellschaftsreform, Bildung und Politisierung. Eine Legende wurde seine Methode zur Alphabetisierung und politischen Bewusstseinsbildung von Erwachsenen in rund 40 Unterrichtsstunden. In dieser Arbeit wird Freires «Theorie» untersucht, seine Praxis entzaubert und die Applausrezeption zurückgewiesen. Gefragt wird namentlich danach, wie Freire in seinem Gesamtwerk Pädagogik mit Politik verband, welche «neuen» Lerninhalte und Lernmethoden er vorsah und womit er das Verhältnis von Lehrenden und Lernenden bestimmte. Weiter wird Freires «Erfolgsgeschichte» durch eine Auswertung von wissenschaftlichen Qualifikationsarbeiten, Web-Sites, Zeitschriftenbeiträgen und Sekundärliteratur hinterfragt. Dabei wird analysiert, inwiefern sich sowohl Freire als auch dessen Rezeption zwischen Idealisierung und Ignoranz bewegen, und ob nicht die brasilianische Reformpädagogik eine Alternative zu Freire bietet.
