The relationship between the messages of Jesus and Paul, once dubbed by one scholar 'the second founder of Christianity', must count as one of the most central issues in the study of the New Testament. The essays collected in this volume first survey the history of the study of this problem, and look at some of the main evidence for supposing that the connection between Jesus and Paul was slight, notably the paucity of Paul's references to Jesus' teachings and his seeming disinterest in the earthly Jesus. Other essays take up the question of the continuity between the teaching and the manner of life of the two men, and raise the question how this continuity may have been mediated from one to the other. A final essay raises the question how far Paul's statements about Christ were related to the earthly life of Jesus. This volume brings together a number of substantial contributions to this question, by Professor V.P. Furnish of Dallas, by two scholars from the German Democratic Republic, Professor N. Walter and Dr C. Wolff, and by the editor.

Als 20-60 Jahre nach den Paulusbriefen die Evangelien niedergeschrieben wurden, hatte sich das paulinische Gedankengut nahezu überall durchgesetzt und beeinflusste tiefgreifend die Evangelisten, die die Geschichte Jesu auf der Basis von authentischen Überlieferungen so umschrieben, dass er nicht mehr als Protestler gegen die römische Fremdherrschaft, sondern als Reformer des Judentums erschien. Es gab und gibt aber auch Menschen, die unabhängig des christologischen Dogmas nach ihm fragen und wissen wollen, wer dieser Mensch eigentlich war, wie er leibte und lebte, wie er zu dem wurde, der ans Kreuz ging. Es ist also durchaus verständlich, wenn es Menschen gibt, die nach Jesus von Nazareth fragen, weil sie in ihm den Christus erkannt haben und ihm glauben, der ihr fester Halt und Glaubensgrund ist. Ebenso verständlich ist es, wenn Menschen von der Person des Nazareners beeindruckt nach der historischen Gestalt frei aller christologischen „Ummantelung“ hinter der neutestamentlichen Überlieferung suchen. Die „Leben-Jesu-Forschung“ versuchte auf ihre Weise dies herauszustellen, indem sie auf die Einzigartigkeit der Biographie des Jesus von Nazareth hinweisen wollte. Aber ist es wirklich sinnvoll nach ihm zu suchen und zu forschen? Kann und darf Christologie darauf verzichten? Bedarf der Glaube des historischen Faktes oder sollte er nicht besser nach der geschichtlichen Wirklichkeit des Jesus Christus suchen? Mit Wilhelm Herrmann und Martin Kähler, der ausführlich argumentiert, warum er gerade in der Suche nach dem historischen Jesus einen Fehler sieht, haben wir nun zwei Menschen vor uns, die das Ansinnen der „Leben-Jesu-Forschung“ ablehnen und auf je ihre Weise herausstellen wollen, wo und wie Christus als der das Heil des Menschen Begründende zu finden ist, wie und wo er wirklich ist. Martin Kähler und Wilhelm Herrmann versuchen auf ihre je eigene Art zu zeigen, wo der letzte und feste Grund des Glaubens liegt. Die Reihenfolge in der Darstellung der beiden Quellen folgt der Reihenfolge der Erscheinung, zumal Herrmann auf den Vortrag Kählers reagiert. Um zu zeigen, welchen Stellenwert der historische Jesus hat und was der wirkliche Christus ist, werde ich versuchen, die Positionen in gebotener Länge oder Kürze nachzuzeichnen, um dann die wichtigsten Punkte gegenüberzustellen.

This study compares the Jesus traditions in Paul's genuine letters to the synoptic Jesus tradition. The aim is to identify parallels between Jesus traditions in the Pauline letters and synoptic Gospels and to determine whether the wording of the Pauline Jesus traditions is closer to any particular synoptic Gospel or Q. Paul's quotes of words of the Lord (1 Cor 7:10–11; 9:14; 11:23–25) as well as possible allusions to Jesus traditions in Paul's letters are investigated and compared to similar synoptic sayings of Jesus. Allusions to Jesus traditions in 1 Thessalonians and Romans are revisited. Special attention is paid to possible allusions in Galatians. The findings show that Paul does make use of Jesus traditions resembling those of the synoptics, particularly the Gospel of Matthew. [Paulus und die synoptische Jesustradition] In dieser Arbeit wird die Jesustradition in den Proto-Paulinen mit der synoptischen Jesustradition verglichen. Ziel der Untersuchung ist es, Parallelen zwischen den Jesustraditionen in den Paulusbriefen und Synoptikern aufzuweisen und festzustellen, ob die von Paulus benutzte Jesustradition im Wortlaut näher an einer der Synoptiker bzw. Q ist. Die Zitate der Herrenworte in 1Kor 7,10-11; 9,14 und 11,23-25 werden erneut untersucht, sowie mögliche Anspielungen des Paulus auf die synoptische Jesustradition im ersten Thessalonicherbrief und im Römerbrief. The hypothesis that the Gospel of Mark was heavily influenced by Pauline theology and/or epistles was widespread in the nineteenth century, but fell out of favour for much of the twentieth century. In the last twenty years or so, however, this view has begun to attract renewed support, especially in English language scholarship.
