The first fully instrumented flexible pavement test section in Maine was constructed in Fall, 2005. This paper presents the description of the instruments, their installation, and analysis of temperature and stress-strain data collected so far. Temperature data was collected for a period of five months, and stress strain data were collected by running a Maine Department of Transportation truck at different speeds. The temperature data at two depths in the Hot Mix Asphalt layer were analyzed to develop models to predict these temperatures on the basis of ambient temperature and solar radiation. The haversine equation was found to be suitable for modeling the strain response in HMA layers, whereas slight variations were used for modeling the responses in the subbase and subgrade layers. The effect of speed on time of loading was evaluated and models were developed. The hot mix asphalt tensile strains were found to be affected significantly by the time of loading as well as temperature, and the measured strains matched well with the predicted strains at lower time of loading and lower temperatures. Stresses from the subbase were greater than predicted values. The subbase strains matched very well with the predicted ones. especially at lower temperature and lower time of loading. The measured subgrade stresses were greater than the predicted stress values. For subgrade strain, the predicted values were found to be consistently lower compared to the measured values. For both stresses and strains in the subgrade, the difference was higher for the higher time of loading and higher temperature. Future work includes using an automated system with a weigh in motion sensor to collect data over the internet and evaluating the effect of environmental conditions on response at different layers.

In 1994, a ramp containing two AC and two PCC sections in the SPS-8 experiment was constructed on the Ohio SHRP Test Road. In 1996, 36 more sections in the SPS-1, SPS-2 and SPS-9 experiments were opened to traffic on the mainline pavement. The response and performance of these sections, climatic information from an on-site weather station, subsurface environmental conditions from sensors installed in several test sections, and traffic loading from an on-site weigh-in-motion (WIM) system have been monitored and incorporated into the national LTPP database. Analyses of these data have been published in a number of reports, technical papers and bulletins. The research project documented in this report was the latest effort by ODOT to continue monitoring the response and performance of many of the original 40 test sections and several sections constructed later to replace the lighter designs which, as anticipated, showed early distress. Data in this report cover the years 2000-2005. In addition to the new response and performance data obtained on the test road, this report includes: an analysis of current methodologies to mathematically model AC and PCC pavement structures, a petrographic analysis of concrete from three different PCC pavement mixes and a lean concrete base, and an in-depth analysis of WIM data. Three other experimental pavements have been constructed on ATH 50, LOG 33 and ERI/LOR 2 to evaluate the response and performance of specific parameters of interest to ODOT. These parameters included: high performance concrete containing ground granulated blast furnace slag and different types of dowel bars on ATH 50, different types of base material under flexible pavement on LOG 33, and different types of base material under rigid pavement on ERI/LOR 2. This report also contains data collected on these three pavements during 2000-2005.

Victoria Superheavy Load Move written by Fritz J. Jooste and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994 with Pavements categories.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has been issuing an increasing number of permits for movement of superheavy loads. The effect of superheavy loads on pavements is not well established at the present time. To address this problem, TxDOT has funded a research project with the Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) with the objective of developing a procedure to evaluate the potential for pavement damage on a proposed superheavy load route, as well as to determine whether temporary strengthening measures are needed. During the study a number of superheavy loads will be monitored. This report describes the data collection and analysis results for a superheavy load move which took place in Victoria during December, 1992. The move involved the transport of two superheavy loads. A Multi-Depth Deflectometer measured pavement deflection under the superheavy loads. The study used the deflection data to evaluate the applicability of linear elastic layered theory to predict pavement response under the loading. Predicted displacement from the theory compared favorably with corresponding measurements. To evaluate the effects of multiple wheel loads, an analysis was done to establish how predicted pavement response varies with distance from a given load and with different load configurations. The results indicate that stresses based on a single-axle model yield conservative estimates of the potential for pavement damage. This analysis showed that the road had adequate structural capacity to sustain the superheavy loads without developing visible distress.
