Reflecting on peace and its different dimensions led me to liken it to a precious diamond that has different facets all of which are important: peace with God, peace with oneself, peace with others especially in close relationships, peace in society including considerations of war and peace and peace with the environment. In the following pages I draw on a range of reading and in particular my theological and biblical knowledge. A book could easily have been written on each topic, but to do so would miss the primary purpose which is to show that each facet of peace is important and inter-related. My hope is that the contribution made through this work will give people, in one book, the various dimensions of peace and their significance and bring the reader to an appreciation of each facet.

Peace as Government: The Will to Normalize Timor-Leste brings a problematization of post-conflict reconstruction processes by bridging two theoretical approaches that are often placed in diametrical opposite epistemic poles – the analytical tools developed by Michel Foucault and the English School. The author argues that peace operations have a very precise function in the international scenario – the fostering and the maintenance of a (neo)liberal order in the international society. He evinces that this particular function of peace operations is developed through the will to normalize post-conflict states and their populations. In order to advance his argument, the author analyses the United Nations’ (UN) engagement with Timor-Leste, since no other country had the large number of peace operations, the wide range of spheres of engagement or the depth of involvement that the UN had in Timor-Leste. The author evinces that this will to normalize Timor-Leste is rendered operational though the mechanism of government, the conduct of conducts in a Foucauldian sense, functioning in two levels. At the international level, the government operates through discipline, rewarding and punishing the Timorese state seeking to shape its behaviors as an individual in the international society. At the national level, the government operates through biopolitics, which functions through the attempt of shaping the life-supporting processes of the Timorese population.

Those pieces of carbon go through a lot, just like us being transformed into a diamond. Like a diamond in the rough, there is some work that must be done to remove the flaws and imperfections in us so that we can allow God to shape, cut, mold, and polish us to identify our purpose and ultimate destiny in his Kingdom. All of us need to realize, the just and unjust, that we have potential in God's Kingdom no matter what we have done in life. God loves a repentant sinner no matter how many flaws or imperfection they have. He is forgiving and loving to all. He wants us to accept him as our Lord and Savior so he can mold, shape, and clean us up so we can identify our purpose and destiny in his Kingdom. He wants us to have a relationship with him. He wants to help us understand the treasure in his word. God wants us to shine brilliantly every day because we are to be the light of the world!

I tried to analyze this feeling and thought it must be a second work of grace I had heard about. I called this experience divine unity. As I spoke with mature believers, I discovered they too had experienced this feeling; it was called peace. I had experienced times of peace, but not this kind of peace. This peace was supernatural. I was later to learn this was Shalom, or supernatural peace. If there were no heaven, this peace would be reward enough, in and of itself. It is my prayer that the readers of this book will come to faith, believe in God, and experience this divine peace.
