"Anabaptists believe that peace and peacemaking is at the heart of the gospel. The good news of Jesus is that God’s resurrecting power is present here and now, and his resurrecting power frees us from the death-logic of violence. We can live without violence, free from the burden of self-preservation at the expense of others, because in his death and resurrection Jesus publicly exposed the lie of violence disarming its power. Violence does not produce the safety and security it promises. Violence – subjugation and control through coercion – never brings life; it always brings death. There are six sections to this workbook, and each combines a small essay and some questions for discussion. Each has a related online video(s) to accompany the lesson .... The essay portion is not written to be an exhaustive thesis on each topic but instead provide a starting point that connects some of the assumed framework of our local church and geographical context with the problems we face in being people that imitate Jesus." --

This volume searches for pragmatic answers to the problems that continue to beset peacebuilding efforts at all levels of society, with a singular focus on the role of legitimacy. Many peacebuilding efforts are hampered by their inability to gain the support of those they are trying to help at the local level, or those at regional, national or international levels; whose support is necessary either for success at the local level or to translate local successes to wider arenas. There is no one agreed-upon reason for the difficulty in translating peacebuilding from one arena of action to another, but among those elements that have been studied, one that appears understudied or assumed to be unimportant, is the role of legitimacy. Many questions can be asked about legitimacy as a concept, and this volume addresses these questions through multiple case studies which examine legitimacy at local, regional, national and international levels, as well as looking at how legitimacy at one level either translates or fails to translate at other levels, in order to correlate the level of legitimacy with the success or failure of peacebuilding projects and programs The value of this work lies both in the breadth of the cases and the singular focus on the role of legitimacy in peacebuilding. By focusing on this concept this volume represents an attempt to build beyond the critical peacebuilding approach of deconstructing the liberal peacebuilding paradigm to a search for pragmatic answers to the problems that continue to plague peacebuilding efforts at all levels of society. This book will be of much interest to students of peacebuilding, conflict resolution, development studies, security studies and International Relations.

How do local communities effectively build peace and reconciliation before, during and after open violence? This trailblazing book gives practical examples, from the Global North, the former Soviet bloc and Global South, on communities addressing conflict in divided and contested societies. The book draws on a range of critical perspectives and practitioner analyses. The diverse case studies demonstrate the considerable knowledge, skills, commitment, courage and relationships within local communities that a critical community development approach can support and encourage. Concluding with activists' perspectives on working with the challenges of violence, the book offers insights for both an understanding of the root causes of conflict and for bottom-up peacebuilding.

Intractable conflict is a protracted, violent and long-time struggle, wherein generation after generation is socially conditioned to continue fighting. To break the chain of destruction, a revolutionary peacemaking process is required. This book serves as an introduction to the study of peacemaking revolutions, which are necessary to build a peaceful and well-functioning society in desperate intractable conflict situations. The challenge of peacemaking revolution is to turn opposing parties into a peacemaking community. A peacemaking community offers political platforms to involve the different societal elements of the opposing parties in the struggle for change. It offers a consensus-building process that approaches the conflict from different sides, dimensions and directions. This book provides a fresh perspective to the study of destructive social conflicts, their transformation, and resolution. It will serve to provoke a critical discussion among those who are interested in the new emerging study of peacemaking revolutions.
