Imagine that Jane Austen had written the opening line of her satirical novel Pride and Prejudice this way: "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a good romp and a good wife — although not necessarily from the same person or from the opposite sex." In Pride and Prejudice: Hidden Lusts Mr. Darcy has never been more devilish and the seemingly chaste Elizabeth never more turned on. The entire cast of characters from Austen's classic is here in this rewrite that goes all the way. This time Mr. Bingley and his sister both have designs on Mr. Darcy's manhood; Elizabeth's bff Charlotte marries their family's strange relation and stumbles upon a secret world of feminine relations more to her liking; and, in this telling, men are not necessarily the the only dominating sex. And of course there's some good old fashioned bodice ripping that shows no pride or prejudice and reveals hot hidden lusts in every page-turning chapter.

Empowerment of Women for Promoting Health and Quality of Life reviews the evolution of modern Public Health and Global Public Health and the role of women's empowerment for promoting global health. It critically reviews the evolution of global health since the 1990s when the UN initiated the Human Development Approach and adopted the millennial development goals through global consensuses. It analyses the paradigm shifts from disease-based prevention using the Public Health model to a new paradigm focusing on the root causes of health problems globally (e.g. inequalities, powerlessness). It reviews the philosophical, theoretical and empirical foundations of these paradigms. The second section presents our meta-analysis of 86 successful women's empowerment case-studies around the world that address threats to health and well-being of their families and communities. These movements represent four domains: human-rights, equal-rights, health, and income. Using an EMPOWER (acronym) framework designed for the meta-analysis, it answers six questions: can ordinary women organize empowerment movements that enhance the well-being of their families and communities; if so, what are their characteristics; what problems motivate them; which empowerment methods are used and do they vary by domains; who support and oppose them and how; and what are the social contexts that affect their movements. Success consists of: accomplishing the original goal/s, external recognition and/or replication by others, and subjective and objective empowerment outcomes. A summary of each case allows readers to learn directly from that movement. The final chapter critically reviews the key findings, issues and their implications for policy, actions, and research in human service professions.

This is the story of teaching consciousness as a requirement for transformations in social justice. In artful narrative, Nesha Haniff traces her own conscientization as a colonized child in Guyana, exploring the cultural and intellectual forces that shape the creation of the Pedagogy of Action. Drawing from Paulo Freire and Ela Bhatt, participants in POA teach an oral HIV education module to marginalized communities in the USA, South Africa and the Caribbean, as the nexus for dismantling traditional pedagogies of race, gender, service and American hegemony. The many challenges of institutional and cultural obstacles, mainly those that excluded poor and black students from overseas travel, required innovation and persistence. The book features essays written by POA students and South African participants reflecting on their own transformations. These essayists are among the hundreds of participants who, over 15 years, in the practice of radical love, grew the Pedagogy of Action.

A A A Thirteen women's studies pioneers from eleven Asian countries narrate their individual passages into feminist consciousness and the monumental effect of women's studies on their private and professional lives. Each woman's odyssey moves against the backdrop of her country's social and political systems, as well as through the dailiness of her family life. In their efforts to balance demanding careers-as anthropologists, economists, psychologists, and even as a member of parliament-with "normal" family lives, these women all come to realize that their husbands experienced no such difficulties. They regard women's studies as a key strategy for changing women's lives, just as it has changed theirs. A A A In Changing Lives , women's studies link these stories, although the individual narratives are extremely diverse" Aurora Javate de Dios worked as a political activist in the Philippines in the 1970s, then married and reared three children before becoming a women's studies pionerr; Economist Fareeha Zafar worked to establish the first women's trade union in Pakistan in the early 1970s and to found the Women's Action Forum, and women's studies in Pakistan; After Liang Jun of China, at 40, married, with two children and an academic career, attended a lecture by Li Xiaojiang she suddenly saw a "lighthouse on a dark sea". Contributors: Noemi Alindogan-Medina (Philippines); Fanny M. Cheung (Hong Kong); Aurora Javate Dios (Philippines); Cho Hyoung (South Korea); Liang Jun (China); Malavika Karlekar (India); Nora Lan-hung Chiang [Huang] (Taiwan); Yasuko Murumatsu (Japan); Thanh-Dam Truong (Vietnam); Aline K. The authors in this volume address the questions 'What is empowerment?' Is it power over resources? Is it the ability to create 'effective demand'? Is it about the ability to make choices? Is it about access to resources and how they are controlled, politically, economically, by NGOs, by political parties, by the state? Do political parties facilitate or do they channel energies away from empowerment? They evaluate how in different circumstances different political agents have been seen as provider of resources.
