Vivemos tempos de valores em crise e mudanças profundas e rápidas nos relacionamentos. Superficialidade, virtualidade, individualidade, exacerbação do orgulho e da vaidade, desrespeitos de toda ordem são características que marcam a modernidade líquida, termo cunhado por Bauman. Por outro lado, atribui-se ao esporte o poder quase "mágico" de desenvolver valores adequados para uma boa convivência. Infelizmente, entendemos que essa atribuição está mais pautada no senso geral do que em uma proposta pedagógica refletida e aprofundada. Reforçam essa tese os inúmeros exemplos verificados nos próprios ambientes esportivos, desde a iniciação até o alto rendimento, com casos de agressividade entre jogadores, professores e expectadores, a busca pela vitória a qualquer custo, a exclusão sistemática dos menos habilidosos em contraste com a valorização excessiva da soberba dos que apresentam os melhores resultados. Mas o esporte, esse fenômeno humano de múltiplas formas e sentidos, tem o poder de oferecer um ambiente que nenhum outro fenômeno é capaz, unindo em um só espaço crianças, jovens e/ou adultos que compartilharão de dilemas que colocarão à prova seus valores, conflitando seus desejos com os dos demais, podendo entender que, por muitas vezes, será necessário ceder para melhorar individual e coletivamente; que a cooperação é a chave para competir; que a superação, o esforço e a dedicação são pré-requisitos para o desenvolvimento. No entanto, para que o esporte se torne esse ambiente único para a formação da personalidade, é necessário que se busque a criação de uma cultura moral adequada, e, para tanto, a intencionalidade é essencial. E mais, para que as propostas no interior do grupo esportivo sejam intencionais, é necessário que se conheça como a moralidade desenvolve-se e a quais características dessa atmosfera devemos atentar-nos. Neste livro, discutimos a aplicação de propostas de intervenção para o desenvolvimento da personalidade moral durante 5 anos de projeto com o ensino do judô, destacando os aspectos relevantes para a formulação das ações e suas possíveis decorrências. Apesar de atuarmos com uma modalidade esportiva individual, entendemos que as características que aqui tratamos podem ser replicadas em outros espaços e com outros esportes. Dessa forma, convidamos a todos para essa imersão!
