Pedagogias e mulheres em movimentos: enfrentamentos à violência doméstica tem o mérito de oferecer às leitoras e aos leitores uma nova perspectiva de enfrentamento à violência doméstica. A obra circunscreve-se na ação de educadoras/educadores sociais que, por meio da Pedagogia Social, assumem um posicionamento acadêmico e social frente ao tema. Considera, nesse sentido, os cenários dramáticos impostos às mulheres, evidenciados no Relógio da Violência, segundo o qual, a cada dois segundos uma mulher é vítima de violência física ou verbal no Brasil. Em função desses altos índices, fomos desafiadas a pensar e confrontar a realidade e, portanto, propor estratégias educativas de combate à violência doméstica e de gênero na cidade de Santo Antônio de Pádua-RJ. Com esse desafio, analisamos as contribuições da Pedagogia na construção de processos educativos de enfrentamento à violência doméstica, a partir do Instituto do Noroeste Fluminense de Educação Superior (INFES) da Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF). Desde um viés teórico-metodológico da pesquisa-ação, propagamos a Lei n.o 11.340/06 – Maria da Penha –, em sentido a fomentar a criação de uma rede de fortalecimento na luta pelos direitos das mulheres. Enquanto elementos sociais e éticos, provocamos tensões políticas na agenda local de proteção e assistência às vítimas de violência, uma vez que denunciamos a inexistência, na cidade de Santo Antônio de Pádua, de um Núcleo de Atendimento às Mulheres (NUAM), bem como de uma Delegacia Especializada de Atendimento à Mulher (DEAM) – a mais próxima à cidade fica a 126,7 km de distância. No centro das tensões políticas atuais, esta obra reúne importantes elementos que sinalizam as contribuições da Pedagogia para confrontar as colonialidades do tempo presente nas vidas das mulheres, na organização social, nas práticas educativas e, em perspectivas mais amplas, nas políticas públicas. Entre tais contribuições, os resultados defendem o argumento da necessária refundação teórico-metodológica e epistemológica da Pedagogia. Tal refundação, defendida nesta obra, coloca a Pedagogia e as mulheres em movimentos emancipatórios revolucionários voltados à: defesa de Direitos Humanos; desarticulação das redes de violência; promoção de pautas educativas de combate à violência contra a mulher; mediação de conflitos; e fortalecimentos de processos emancipatórios.

This work discusses questions on political participation, representation and legitimacy in the European Union national parliaments. Three major empirical questions structure the book: What affects women's presence in parliaments?, Does the number of women in parliament have an effect? And are women in parliament representing women? Empirical evidences show that institutional reforms need a 'minimal environment' in terms of socio-economic development so as to prove effective. As opposed to the critical mass theory, claiming that a few representatives cannot have an impact on the political outcomes, here the empirical evidences suggest that smaller groups can also influence the different components of the legislative process. The last part turns to the fundamental question of whether a parliament that is descriptively representative, i.e. in which the parliamentarians share certain characteristics with the voters, also is a substantively descriptive parliament, i.e. in which the parliamentarians mirror the voters' opinions.

Ageing populations have gradually become a major concern in many industrialised countries over the past fifty years, drawing the attention of both politics and science. The target of a raft of health and social policies, older people are often identified as a specific, and vulnerable, population. At the same time, ageing has become a specialisation in many disciplines - medicine, sociology, psychology, to name but three – and a discipline of its own: gerontology. This book questions the framing of old age by focusing on the relationships between policy making and the production of knowledge. The first part explores how the meeting of scientific expertise and the politics of old age anchors the construction of both individual and collective relationships to the future. Part II brings to light the many ways in which issues relating to ageing can be instrumentalised and ideologised in several public debate arenas. Part III argues that scientific knowledge itself composes with objectivity, bringing ideologies of its own to the table, and looks at how this impacts discourse about ageing. In the final part, the contributors discuss how the frames can themselves be experienced at different levels of the division of labour, whether it is by people who work on them (legislators or scientists), by people working with them (professional carers) or by older people themselves. Today a similar influx of new immigrants is transforming the city again. Better than one in three New Yorkers is now an immigrant. For example: • Education: Most Jews, despite the myth, were not exceptional students at first, while many immigrant children today do remarkably well. • Jobs: Immigrants of both eras came with more skills than is popularly supposed.
