Nursing Care of the Pediatric Trauma Patient provides the most comprehensive coverage available on nursing care of the pediatric trauma patient. Ideal for both emergency and trauma nurses, this reference discusses pediatric trauma across the continuum of care. This provides a broad perspective that enables the reader to use a systems approach that is consistent with the current health care environment. The book is organized into three sections. The first section, The Scope of Pediatric Trauma, covers issues such as epidemiology, prevention, and outcomes management. The second section, Clinical Concepts, covers issues such as mechanism of injury, pre-hospital care, initial resuscitation, rehabilitation, pain management, nutrition, family-centered care, and violence. Section Three, System Injuries, addresses specific body system issues and sequellae of trauma. Comprehensive content focuses specifically on nursing care of the pediatric trauma patient. The nurse's role in the continuum of care is consistent with the emphasis of the current healthcare environment. The organizational framework focuses on the systems approach and is divided into four sections. The section on The Scope of Pediatric Trauma covers issues such as epidemiology, prevention, outcomes management, and ethical issues. The Clinical Concepts section addresses mechanism of injury, pre-hospital care, initial resuscitation, rehabilitation, pain management, nutrition, family-centered care, and violence. The section on System Injuries covers specific body system issues. The section on Multisystem Issues covers thermal and submersion injuries as well as the unborn infant as trauma victim and sequellae of trauma. Independent and collaborative nursing interventions are emphasized in the System Injuries section. Timely issues such as outcomes management are discussed. Chapters written by nurses practicing in pediatric trauma ensure clinically relevant, up-to-date content.

Pediatric trauma continues to have a significant impact on the health and well-being of children in the United States. Trauma continues to be the leading cause of death in children 1 to 18 years of age and accounted for more than 14,000 deaths among all children 0 to 18 years of age. In 2008, there were more than 8.6 million nonfatal injuries among newborn to 18-year-olds, with an injury rate of greater than 1 in 10. There is little debate that a coordinated effort and pediatric- specific advances in pediatric trauma systems, prehospital care and hospital care, and injury prevention can have a positive impact on pediatric trauma outcomes in the United States. However, there are still gaps in access to centers that deliver pediatric-focused trauma care, especially in rural areas. Furthermore, there are differing views between different centers regarding the optimal approach to the initial evaluation and management of the pediatric trauma patient. This book is targeted to review critical aspects of the care of the pediatric trauma patient, highlighting the most common and critical injuries encountered in the acute care setting.

Nurses in a pediatric emergency department are accustomed to caring for critically ill and injured children. Pediatric trauma requires nurses to have a high level of expertise. However, along with this expertise, nurses need to demonstrate strong leadership skills to be an effective partner in the trauma team. Attaining a pediatric level 1 trauma designation by the American College of Surgeons generated uncertainty in emergency nurses' perceptions of their ability to care for trauma patients. Emergency departments within trauma centers have recognized the need for specialized nursing programs or nursing roles in the care of trauma. Nursing leadership competencies, interprofessional collaboration, and teamwork have an impact on patient care. Creating a trauma resource nurse role can provide the necessary tools for a select group of nurses to develop their clinical expertise and identify new perspectives and ways of knowing when caring for pediatric trauma. Parse's humanbecoming leading-following model will be the theoretical framework for this nursing role. This purpose of this project is to create and implement a trauma resource nurse role in a level 1 pediatric trauma center that is built on a strong foundation of clinical expertise, leadership capability, and self-awareness allowing nurses to act in partnership with physicians and other health care professionals in the trauma team. The creation of the trauma resource nurse role will enhance nursing knowledge while collaborating with the medical model in trauma culture.
