Una noche lo emboscaron seis hombres y en el combate perdió parte de la nariz. La salvó de una manera increíble para la época gracias a los buenos oficios de un médico de la corte. Este incidente tuvo repercusiones que obligaron a Heredia a huir al Nuevo Mundo. En La Española se labró una vida como comerciante y negociante. Pero allá se contagió de la fiebre de conquista y terminó aventurándose en tierra firme, donde dejó huella por sus andanzas y, sobre todo, por fundar la ciudad que se convertiría en la joya de la corona en estos lares: Cartagena de Indias. Una biografía con lances novelescos de un personaje aventurero como pocos que sucumbió a la codicia del oro.
