Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2000 im Fachbereich Filmwissenschaft, Note: 1, Freie Universität Berlin (Inst. für Theaterwissenschaft), Veranstaltung: PS: Film im Film, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Ironischerweise beendet ausgerechnet Peeping Tom die Karriere eines der bedeutendsten britischen Regisseure, Michael Powell, wo doch gerade dieser Film so viel über das Filmen selbst erzählt. Nach seiner Weltpremiere am 7. April 1960 mußte Peeping Tom eine Welle von Haßtiraden seitens der britischen Kritiker über sich ergehen lassen bis er schließlich, nach nur zwei Wochen Spielzeit, gänzlich aus dem Verkehr gezogen wurde. Erst 1979, dank der Bemühungen von Martin Scorsese, der Powells Werk schätzte und bewunderte, wurde Peeping Tom auf dem New-Yorker Filmfestival wieder aufgeführt. Als erster Film seiner Art spürt Peeping Tom die geheimen voyeuristischen Gelüste der modernen Gesellschaft auf – ursprünglich enthielt er sogar die erste Nacktszene (mit Pamela Green), die allerdings von der Zensur gestrichen wurde. Dennoch wurden Powell v.a. Pornographie und die Verherrlichung von Sexualsadismus vorgeworfen. Aus heutiger Sicht scheint diese Art der Verurteilung völlig ungerechtfertigt. Nicht nur, weil sich das Kino und die Sehgewohnheiten seines Publikums gewandelt haben. Die Kritiken lassen vor allem den wesentlichen Gehalt des Films völlig außer Acht: Powell hatte wohl nicht die Absicht, die Verbrechen eines Lustmörders zu bagatellisieren, wie es in einer der Kritiken heißt. Die Verbrechen sowie die morbide Lust, sie zu filmen und immer wieder anzuschauen, dienen vielmehr als Folie einer tiefer gehenden Reflexion von Wahrnehmungsmechanismen des Kinos und darüber hinaus. Peeping Tom markiert den Höhepunkt von Powells Karriere und ist auch gleichzeitig ein Manifest seiner eigenen Obsession und Liebe zum Kino. Der Film ist einerseits eine Untersuchung der eigentlichen Essenz des Kinos, des Sehens in all seinen Formen vom neugierigen Beobachten bis hin zur krankhaften Skopophilie. Andererseits stellt er aber auch eine Art empirischen Versuch dar, in dem der Zuschauer, herausgerissen aus seiner Unschuld und dem sicheren Dunkel des Zuschauerraumes, Teil des Films und seines Themas wird. Durch die raffinierte Verstrickung von Film-im-Film mit altbekannten Genremotiven dekonstruiert Powell das Gefüge von narrativen und formalen Regeln, das Regisseuren wie Hitchcock in Rear Window oder Rope erlaubte, Tabus auf die Leinwand zu bringen, ohne sich der Immoralität schuldig zu machen. Möglicherweise war auch das der wahre Grund für die Empörung der Zeitgenossen. [...]
