Peer Gynt is a five-act play in verse by Henrik Ibsen, loosely based on the fairy tale Per Gynt. Written in the Dano-Norwegian language, it is the most widely performed Norwegian play. Henrik Johan Ibsen (1828-1906) was a major Norwegian playwright largely responsible for the rise of modern realistic drama. He is often referred to as the "father of modern drama." His plays were considered scandalous to many of his era. His work examined the realities that lay behind many facades, possessing a revelatory nature that was disquieting to many contemporaries. His first play, the tragedy Catilina (1850), was published under the pseudonym Brynjulf Bjarme, when he was only 22, but it was not performed. His play Brand (1865), was to bring him the critical acclaim he sought, along with a measure of financial success, as was his next play, Peer Gynt (1867). With success, Ibsen became more confident and began to introduce more and more his own beliefs and judgments into the drama, exploring what he termed the "drama of ideas." His other notable works include Love's Comedy (1862), A Doll's House (1879), Ghosts (1881), An Enemy of the People (1882), The Wild Duck (1884), Hedda Gabler (1890) and When We Dead Awaken (1899).

In a dramatic final scene, he is confronted with the Button-moulder, who maintains that Peer's soul must be melted down with other faulty goods unless he can explain when and where in life he has been "himself." Ibsen's play has been performed, debated, studied, and "interpreted" at the highest academic institutions across the world. In essence it tells of man's striving to be better-and is an extreme example of man's fall. Gynt is mysteriously attractive to women, a narcissist, a self-idolator, a liar, and a self-deceiver. But finally, he is called to account, and finds a way to justify his actions and to become a better person. Does he succeed? This remains the burning question . . . Ibsen asked the composer Edvard Grieg to compose music for the play-which was done, the most famous of which became the suite popularly known as In the Hall of the Mountain King.

"A Doll's House" is a three-act play in prose by Henrik Ibsen. It premiered at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1879. The play is significant for its critical attitude toward 19th century marriage norms. It aroused great controversy at the time, as it concludes with the protagonist, Nora, leaving her husband and children because she wants to discover herself. "Hedda Gabler" is a play published in 1890. It premiered in 1891 in Germany and gained recognition as a classic of realism, nineteenth century theatre, and world drama. Hedda may be portrayed as an idealistic heroine fighting society, a victim of circumstance, a prototypical feminist, or a manipulative villain. "Ghosts" is a play written in 1881 and first staged in 1882. Like many of Ibsen's better-known plays, Ghosts is a scathing commentary on 19th-century morality. Ghosts had challenged the hypocrisy of Victorian morality and was deemed indecent for its veiled references to syphilis. "An Enemy of the people" is an 1882 play originally written in Danish in response to the public outcry against his play Ghosts, which at that time was considered scandalous. "The Wild Duck" (1884), in a sense, solved Ibsen's own moral dilemma as he struggled between a militant idealism (as in Enemy of the People) and his own worldly temperament.
