Analisis kontrastif dan komparatif ialah dua kaedah dalam bidang linguistik yang melibatkan perbandingan unsur linguistik antara dua bahasa atau lebih. Secara asas, kontrastif dan komparatif ialah aktiviti mencari persamaan dan perbezaan antara dialek atau bahasa. Namun demikian, kedua-dua istilah ini boleh membawa maksud yang berbeza. Kontrastif melibatkan perbandingan bahasa-bahasa yang berbeza yang bukannya tergolong dalam keluarga bahasa yang sama. Komparatif pula melibatkan perbandingan bahasa daripada keluarga bahasa yang sama dan dialek daripada satu bahasa yang sama. Bab-bab dalam buku ini berfokus pada perbandingan dalam bentuk kontrastif dan komparatif. Dalam hal ini, kedua-dua kaedah ini berfokus pada aspek teori dan penerapan. Dari segi teoretis, buku ini menerangkan kerangka teori perbandingan atau peranti kontrastif dan komparatif yang boleh digunakan untuk membuat perbandingan linguistik.
