Pemberdayaan masyarakat dalam waktu yang sama juga dilakukan oleh Sjech Lungguak Batu atau yang biasa dipanggil dengan angku Siah Gaek. Setelah Angku Siah Gaek dan Sjech Mudo wafat, pemberdayaan masyarakat kemudian diambil alih oleh generasi sesudahnya yaitu Malin el-Yusufi. Di antara ulama atau pembaharu Sumatera Barat yang telah di sebutkan di atas, ada ulama lain yang belum terangkat kepermukaan. Potensi sejarahnya turut memberikan andil terhadap perubahan dalam masyarakat pada masa penjajahan Belanda dan Jepang seperti ulama dan pembaharu lainnya di Minangkabau.

A distinguishing feature of recent urbanization in the ASEAN countries of Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Indonesia is the outward extension of their mega-cities (Bangkok, Jakarta, Manila, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur) beyond the metropolitan borders, resulting in the establishment of new towns, industrial estates, and housing projects in previously rural areas. This process has both positive and negative effects. On one side, household incomes and employment opportunities are increasing, but on the other, the growth often causes serious problems in terms of environmental deterioration, conflicting land uses, and inadequate housing and service provisions. In short, it is the piQneering character which the study of Indonesian literatures still largely PQssesses that has caused people to be contented with preliminary surveys Qf this extensive field of study j it is true that a number of welcQme milestones have been erected, but it can in no way be said that the cha:rting Qf the whole field is yet complete.
