But these beautiful mountains and valleys and rivers mean increased difficulty Of intercourse between the people. Families living in one valley may be entirely cut Off from others only a few miles distant. These barriers have prevented the growth of common interests with the consequence that each little valley contains a group interested in itself but not interested in the groups in adjoining valleys. Not illustrated. 1908 edition. Excerpt: ...water that we desired for the asking. We were not delayed at the seat of customs, and taking the short cut around Montreal reached Ottawa soon after six. We plunge immediately into an address of welcome on behalf of the Dominion Government by the Hon. George H. Perley, the acting Prime Minister; on behalf of the city of Ottawa by His Worship the Mayor; and on behalf of the Canadian Club by the president of that organization; and the Librarian of Congress upholds the dignity of the occasion by an appropriate response. Meetings are held every day at 9: 30, at 2: 30, and at 8: 15, and all social engagements had to be performed in the hour or two that preceded meals. Dominion Day was made the exception, and after listening to the splendid address by the "Grand Old Man of Canada" we witnessed an uncompromising battle between Mr. James W. Rob ertson, a definite Scotchman, and Professor John McNaughton, of Magill University, who may not be Scotch. This contest, although not prearranged, was one of the most enjoyable features of the meeting. There was a cricket match between Magill University and Ottawa, a splendid regatta between the crews of Ottawa, Lachine and Britannia, and a dance at the Club House in the evening. One of the most enjoyable incidents was an afternoon garden party at the Experimental Farm, where we were received on behalf of the Government by the I-Ion. Martin Burrell and Mrs. Burrell. On Saturday evening, after the meeting, the Dominion Government gave a ball in the Parliament Buildings in honor of the Association. Ottawa possesses one of the finest natural golf courses, and the ladies of the party assembled for afternoon tea in the beautiful Club House on the Hull side of the river, and a number of the men were...

Excerpt from Pennsylvania Library Notes, Vol. 3: July, 1910 Several new libraries have been established or reorganized during the year. Kane has just opened a Public Library under the joint aus pioes of an association and the school-board. It occupies two large and well-lighted rooms on the first floor Of the new High School build ing. They have been attractively fitted up and stocked with about two thousand books. As they did not feel able to employ a trained librarian the cataloguing and other technical work was done under the Supervision Of the Commission. The interest on the part of the towns people is good and the prospect for success is fine. At Lock Haven all the difficulties have been Overcome and the com bination Of the Smith and Ross foundations only awaits the prepara tion Of the necessary papers by the attorneys. The trustees are look ing around for a trained librarian and as soon as one is secured the reorganization will begin. The library will be charmingly located in the Ross home which is on the main street not far from the center Of the town. The building is surrounded by a lawn with shrubbery and fine Old trees. The Blairsville library has been thrown open to all the people and is now being reorganized for the new and wider usefulness. The New Castle library which has been under the auspices Of the Y. W. C. A., has been taken over by the city and is to be put in some more public place where it will be entirely by itself. It is the intention Of the trustees to secure a thoroughly trained librarian and put the library on a solid basis.
