El Comité Organizador del 56º Congreso Internacional de Americanistas (ICA) publica las actas del encuentro celebrado en la Universidad de Salamanca el 15 al 20 de julio de 2018. Bajo el lema «Universalidad y particularismo en las Américas», reflexionó sobre la dialéctica entre la universalidad y los particularismos en la producción de conocimiento, un diálogo en el que la necesidad de conocer los particularismos de los fenómenos sociales, políticos, artísticos y culturales obliga a formular nuevas hipótesis que enriquecen y replantean las grandes teorías generales de las ciencias y las humanidades. El carácter interdisciplinario e inclusivo que ha caracterizado al ICA desde su inicio en 1875, como un congreso de estudios de área en sentido completo, hace aún más significativa esa dinámica de producción de conocimiento. Con un planteamiento interdisciplinario e inclusivo, ICA reúne a investigadores que estudian el continente americano, desde Alaska hasta Tierra de Fuego, incluyendo el territorio del Caribe, a partir del análisis de su política, economía, cultural, lenguas, historia y prehistoria. Así, el Comité Organizador les invitó participar en el análisis y la reflexión sobre las especificidades de las Américas y el Caribe con el objetivo de enriquecer las grandes teorías generales.

A leitura deste livro demonstra que, não obstante as dificuldades que infelizmente todos conhecemos, os autores e autoras constituíram-se como um verdadeiro grupo de trabalho e as interconexões, dentro de temas aparentemente tão diferentes entre si, são indícios evidentes de um debate que a distância e o isolamento não apagaram. In Territories of Difference, Arturo Escobar, author of the widely debated book Encountering Development, analyzes the politics of difference enacted by specific place-based ethnic and environmental movements in the context of neoliberal globalization. His analysis is based on his many years of engagement with a group of Afro-Colombian activists of Colombia’s Pacific rainforest region, the Proceso de Comunidades Negras (PCN). Escobar offers a detailed ethnographic account of PCN’s visions, strategies, and practices, and he chronicles and analyzes the movement’s struggles for autonomy, territory, justice, and cultural recognition. Yet he also does much more. Consistently emphasizing the value of local activist knowledge for both understanding and social action and drawing on multiple strands of critical scholarship, Escobar proposes new ways for scholars and activists to examine and apprehend the momentous, complex processes engulfing regions such as the Colombian Pacific today. Escobar illuminates many interrelated dynamics, including the Colombian government’s policies of development and pluralism that created conditions for the emergence of black and indigenous social movements and those movements’ efforts to steer the region in particular directions. He examines attempts by capitalists to appropriate the rainforest and extract resources, by developers to set the region on the path of modernist progress, and by biologists and others to defend this incredibly rich biodiversity “hot-spot” from the most predatory activities of capitalists and developers. He also looks at the attempts of academics, activists, and intellectuals to understand all of these complicated processes. Territories of Difference is Escobar’s effort to think with Afro-Colombian intellectual-activists who aim to move beyond the limits of Eurocentric paradigms as they confront the ravages of neoliberal globalization and seek to defend their place-based cultures and territories.

Since the earliest years of European colonialism, Latin America has been a region of seemingly intractable inequalities, marked by a stark divide between the haves and the have-nots. This collection illuminates the diverse processes that have combined to produce and reproduce inequalities in Latin America, as well as some of the implications of those processes for North Americans. Anthropologists, cultural critics, historians, and political scientists from North and South America offer new and varied perspectives, building on the sociologist Charles Tilly’s relational framework for understanding enduring inequalities. While one essay is a broad yet nuanced analysis of Latin American inequality and its persistence, another is a fine-grained ethnographic view of everyday life and aspirations among shantytown residents living on the outskirts of Lima. Other essays address topics such as the initial bifurcation of Peru’s healthcare system into one for urban workers and another for the rural poor, the asymmetrical distribution of political information in Brazil, and an evolving Cuban “aesthetics of inequality,” which incorporates hip-hop and other transnational cultural currents. Exploring the dilemmas of Latin American inequalities as they are playing out in the United States, a contributor looks at new immigrant Mexican farmworkers in upstate New York to show how undocumented workers become a vulnerable rural underclass. Taken together, the essays extend social inequality critiques in important new directions. Een zwarte vrijstaat in Suriname vertelt de geschiedenis van de Okanisi in de achttiende eeuw. Het is een geschiedenis van hekserij en orakels, van knechting en ontsnapping, van opsporing en oorlog. Na jaren van strijd kwam de koloniale overheid tot de conclusie dat zij de Marrons niet onderwerpen kon en bood hun in 1760 een vrede aan die door de Okanisi werd geaccepteerd. Het sluiten van de vrede tussen overheid en Okanisi was de erkenning van de eerste ‘zwarte vrijstaat’ in Suriname.
