Mondo religioso e mondo secolare sono davvero così distanti e inconciliabili? La fede deve per forza rimanere relegata in ambiti dell’esperienza preclusi ai non credenti? Alain de Botton è sicuro di no. Secondo l’autore, infatti, «si può rimanere atei convinti riuscendo, almeno sporadicamente, a trovare nella religione una qualche utilità, un qualche motivo di interesse o fonte di conforto, e prendendo in considerazione l’ipotesi di adattare alla vita laica alcune norme e consuetudini religiose». Osservando senza pregiudizi l’ascendente che le istituzioni religiose esercitano sui fedeli, De Botton si interroga sull’opportunità di sfruttare certi meccanismi – spogliati del loro lato trascendente – per contrastare la disgregazione del senso di comunità nella società laica moderna, e per far fronte alle fragilità che minano l’equilibrio di tutti gli esseri umani. La complessità liturgica della messa, per esempio, con le sue norme ben definite a regolare le interazioni tra sconosciuti, può aiutare a cementare lo spirito di gruppo, mentre festività come lo Yom Kippur dimostrano che l’elaborazione istituzionalizzata di sentimenti negativi come la rabbia è un espediente efficacissimo per la risoluzione dei conflitti sociali. E anche nel campo dell’istruzione, quale potenziale dirompente avrebbe un corso universitario che insegnasse a leggere i classici per rispondere ai bisogni dell’anima, adottando Madame Bovary e Anna Karenina come libri di testo sulle difficoltà del matrimonio? Alain de Botton ci offre una tesi provocatoria, ricca di spunti di riflessione per una società sempre più arida: un vero e proprio catechismo per atei.
