The work of a group of social scientists and professionals, whose own work and thinking have been profoundly affected by the political crisis of that time, it provides an in-depth research and analysis as well as critical reflections on the difficult political and theoretical issues raised by political violence and the struggle in South Africa.

Youth violence: Sources and solutions in South Africa thoroughly and carefully reviews the evidence for risk and protective factors that influence the likelihood of young people acting aggressively. Layers of understanding are built by viewing the problem from a multitude of perspectives, including the current situation in which South African youth are growing up, perspectives from developmental psychology, the influences of race, class and gender, and of the media. The book then reviews the evidence for effective interventions in the contexts of young people’s lives – their homes, their schools, their leisure activities, with gangs, in the criminal justice system, in cities and neighbourhoods, and with sexual offenders. In doing so, thoughtful suggestions are made for keeping an evidence-based perspective while (necessarily) adapting interventions for developing world contexts, such as South Africa. Youth violence in South Africa: Sources and solutions is a valuable addition to the library of anyone who has ever wondered about youth violence, or wanted to do something about it.

Corrective Rape written by Charlayne Hunter-Gault and has been published by Agate Digital this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-02-24 with Social Science categories.

In this investigation of sexual violence against LGBTI individuals in South Africa, esteemed journalist Charlayne Hunter-Gault sheds light on practices of "corrective rape" — an assault in which a man rapes a lesbian in an attempt to “cure” her sexual orientation. This book examines the wider social context of anti-LGBTI sentiment in South Africa, a country that was the first in the world to include constitutional language forbidding discrimination on the ground of sexual orientation, and the search for equality in a post-apartheid nation. Hunter-Gault interviews sexual assault victims and explores South Africa's problem of sexual violence — particularly against black lesbians — within the lens of the country's complicated history towards human rights. Based on a 2012 article the author originally published in the New Yorker, this book features an extensive amount of new material with updated historical perspective, interviews, and case studies. Corrective Rape is a critically important and eye-opening account of a devastating problem within one of Africa's most populous and economically advanced nations. Anyone concerned with the rights of individuals in the gay and lesbian community, as well as human rights in general around the world, needs to be informed on this topic. Hunter-Gault, an award-winning journalist with years of experience reporting on civil rights and injustice around the globe, has crafted an engaging, fast-paced read that will spur dialogue and inspire action.

More than 15,000 people have been killed and 500,000 displaced during years of low-intensity civil war in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal. This book describes the work of the Programme for Survivors of Violence (PSV), which (with the support of Oxfam) helps communities to grapple with the complex social, economic, political, and psychological problems posed by the conflict. A framework to guide interventions in polarised communities is outlined, with a detailed description of its application to work with young people (especially the male members of gangs and paramilitary units), children, women, and local leaders. The final chapter summarises the principles which inform the work of the PSV, and identifies the fundamental elements that have contributed to its sustained success. The book is written for community leaders in any society damaged by civil conflict; for development agencies which support such communities; and for students and teachers of community-development theory and practice. Its theoretical framework may be applied usefully in a broad range of situations.

The book focuses on the ways in which gendered and sexualised systems of power are produced in educational settings that are framed by broader social and cultural processes, both of which shape and are shaped by children and young people as they interact with each other. All these nuanced features of gender and sexuality are vital if we are to understand inequalities and violence, and fundamental to our three-ply yarn approach in this book. Focusing on the South African context, but with international relevance, the authors adopt the metaphor of the three-ply yarn (Jordan-Young, 2010): these being the cross-cutting themes of gender, sexuality and violence. Subsequently, the book illustrates the intimate ties that bind gender and sexuality with the social and cultural dimensions of violence, as experienced in educational settings.

More than 25 years have passed since South Africans were being shot or hacked or burned to death in political violence, and the memory of the trauma has faded. Nevertheless, some 20 500 people were killed between 1984 and 1994. Conventional wisdom has it that most died as a result of the ANC's people's war. Many books have been written on South Africa's political transition, but none has dealt adequately with the people's war. This book does. It shows the extraordinary success of the people's war in giving the ANC a virtual monopoly on power, as well as the great cost at which this was done. The high price of it is still being paid. Apart from the terror and killings it sparked at the time, the people's war set in motion forces that cannot easily be tamed. Violence, once unleashed, is not easy to stamp out. 'Ungovernability', once generated, is not readily reversed. For this new edition, Anthea Jeffery has revised and abridged her seminal work. She has also included a brief overview of the ANC's National Democratic Revolution for which the people's war was intended to prepare the way. Since 1994, the NDR has been implemented in many different spheres. It is now being speeded up in its second and more radical phase.
