This book tells the story of the Mekong River, from its source in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to its delta in southern Vietnam, and the geographical changes in its environment on its journey to the sea. It mainly focuses on the many ethnic minorities living within the Mekong's reach. These minority nationalities all have their own distinct customs, traditions and ways of life that have carried on for many centuries. Much of that has survived the influences of politics, national integration and modernization. Nevertheless, their traditions and lifestyles are being profoundly affected by recent economic development and mass tourism. The book introduces each of these peoples and reveals and examines what makes them unique.It begins with the Tibetans in the high-altitude, snow mountain regions of the Upper Mekong. Except on tourist brochures, the indigenous peoples of Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, and southern China (Yunnan) are the least visible, and most excluded, of citizens. All these countries have used similar strategies to classify, include, or exclude minority peoples from the project of nationalism. Understanding the cultural and economic trajectories of key minorities such as the Dai, Hmong, Lahu, Akha, and Karen is critical to apprehending the construction, workings, and future of each of these nation-states, indeed of the Mekong region as a whole. Conversely, as vividly demonstrated here, the minority peoples--many spanning more than one country--have adapted and accommodated to, or actively resisted, majority culture and state policy alike. There continues to be undeniable impoverishment, cultural loss, and "social suffering" in some communities, particularly among ex-swidden based upland groups in Vietnam and laos; the rearranging or reconstituting of trading and social networks; the over-commodification of aspects of culture, often for domestic tourism; and struggles to maintain language, rituals, and belief systems. The studies here bring alive these communities in transformation, pointing out those in near dissolution, such as some Akha villages in Laos affected by overzealous opium-eradication programs, as well as those reclaiming and expanding their cultural space, such as the Dai in Sipsongpanna/Xishuangbanna engaged in a cross-border revival of Theravada Buddhism and Dai culture. Malaria control was identified as one of the main priorities in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS). Malaria is one of the major diseases undermining the health of ethnic minorities. Approximately one third of ethnic minorities, about seven million people, live in remote, often hilly and forested, parts of these countries. Many are also more vulnerable due to lack of education, poor health status, lack of formal land ownership, and in general not being familiar with the ways of the modern world. The most vulnerable among all these groups are pregnant women, young children, and very poor and malnourished people. Although the malaria situation in the Mekong region has improved over the past several years, it is widely recognized that ethnic minorities, migrants and forest workers remain at high risk for malaria. They often live in remote areas with weak or without public health systems, and lack physical, social and financial access to preventive and curative care.
