Il libro racconta la storia di Peppino Impastato un giovane nato a Cinisi, piccolo centro vicino a Palermo, che rompe con il padre, che lo caccia di casa e, forte delle sua formazione comunista, avvia un'attività politico-culturale contro il silenzio e le diffuse connivenze mafiose. Dalla protesta in piazza ai giornali volanti, alle manifestazioni improvvisate, Peppino arriva infine all'uso politico di una radio libera autofinanziata, Radio Aut, dai microfoni della quale fa nomi e cognomi, denuncia interessi che ruotano intorno all'ampliamento dell'aeroporto di Punta Raisi, mettendo con le spalle al muro il boss Tano Badalamenti che, per ritorsione, ne commissiona l'assassinio. Il 9 maggio 1978 a Cinisi viene ritrovato il corpo senza vita di Peppino Impastato. L'evento non crea all'epoca molto scalpore“sepolto” da un'altra tragica notizia, il ritrovamento, in via Caetani, del cadavere di Aldo Moro. L'11 aprile 2002 Gaetano Badalamenti, dopo quattro anni di processo, è condannata all'ergastolo come mandante e responsabile dell'omicidio di Peppino.

A soli trent’anni, nella notte tra l’8 e il 9 maggio 1978, viene assassinato con una carica di tritolo lungo la ferrovia Palermo-Trapani per aver denunciato speculazioni e affari di mafia, in primo luogo quelli legati al boss siciliano Gaetano Badalamenti. La sua storia – dalla militanza politica giovanile all’esperienza di controinformazione condotta dai microfoni di Radio Aut – è stata raccontata anche nel film I cento passi di Marco Tullio Giordana.

L’espressione antimafia è ormai diventata di uso comune e i diversi soggetti che ne fanno parte (associazioni, fondazioni, centri studio, comitati più o meno formalizzati...) hanno la possibilità di utilizzare numerosi canali di comunicazione, sfruttandone la trasversalità e stabilendo rapporti sempre più diretti con i propri destinatari. Tuttavia risultano ancora carenti le ricerche sociologiche e politologiche che analizzano le forme di opposizione alle mafie e sono rari gli approfondimenti sul tema delle strategie comunicative adottate. L’adozione di un approccio sociologico ha permesso di comprendere la crucialità rivestita dalla comunicazione, in particolare in una società sempre più tecnologica e in cui il web 2.0 gioca un ruolo fondamentale. Canali di comunicazione sempre più evoluti hanno favorito la creazione di network, consentendo l’adozione da parte delle associazioni antimafia di strategie sempre più complesse ed efficaci. Tali considerazioni sono alla base del saggio, uno studio analitico relativo alle forme – diventate nel tempo vere e proprie strategie – e ai canali di comunicazione nonché gli strumenti utilizzati per liberarsi dal dominio mafioso.
