Looking at the nineteenth and twentieth centuries – the onset of modern economic growth – the book studies the relationship between agriculture and other economic sectors, exploring the use of resources (land, labour, capital) and the influence of institutional and technological factors in the long-run performance of agricultural activities. Esta obra se presenta como una apreciación objetiva concreta para el cantón de Pérez Zeledón, donde los autores exponemos nuestra propuesta hacia la construcción de un modelo de desarrollo agro-empresarial de exportación de cultivos productivos agroindustriales, agropecuarios y de piscicultura, técnicamente planificados y realistas para los sectores de los productores que exportan, los que venden en el mercado interno y los “vulnerables”. Los autores, convencidos de que la vía para generar el propio desarrollo de nuestro país es a través de la generación de empresarios, creemos que al promover esperanzas para propiciar el desarrollo agroindustrial exportador de nuestro cantón mediante esta obra, estamos contribuyendo con la sociedad y con el Estado a potenciar las posibilidades para que se generen políticas públicas hacia este horizonte. Es el empresario quien genera oportunidades de empleo, eleva los niveles de exportación de la nación, contribuye con la financiación de los presupuestos públicos y de las instituciones del Estado. Mediante la generación de modelos agrícolas, agropecuarios y agroindustriales que se puedan financiar a través del programa Banca para el Desarrollo que existe en nuestro país y mediante fuentes de financiamiento internacionales que inviertan en la seguridad alimentaria de los países latinoamericanos, el agricultor empresario y el emprendedurista tendrá más y mejores posibilidades de crecer y tener una mejor calidad de vida en este bello cantón. Costa Rica debe simplificar el exceso de trámites para facilitar la financiación de iniciativas empresariales agroexportadoras, sin poner en riesgo los capitales y por ello sugerimos un modelo de desarrollo sustentable como alternativa para asegurar el éxito del abastecimiento alimentario de nuestra región, luchar contra el desempleo y el flagelo de las drogas, así como proveer para el crecimiento económico del cantón de Pérez Zeledón. Soñamos que la Corporación o Zona Franca Agroindustrial de Pérez Zeledón deje de estar escrita a tinta y papel y se convierta en una realidad, para que muchos agricultores emprendedores y empresarios como a quienes vemos cada fin de semana en la Feria del Productor Generaleño o en los barrios y caseríos colocando sus cosechas puedan desarrollar sus proyectos y crear nuevas oportunidades de trabajo para crear riqueza a nuestro país.
