El spleen puede significar muchisimas cosas: tedio, angustia, cansancio, o temor. Sin embargo, en rigor puede definirse como la sensacion que acompana la vivencia individual de lo exterior, la mayoria de veces, por su cariz, inconclusa y poco inquietante. El transeunte que decide dar una vuelta por su ciudad, experimenta el spleen cuando llega el momento en el que aquello con lo que se cruza ya no tiene para el un efecto distinto del aburrimiento; atrapado en medio de un sin fin de cosas rutinarias y sin sentido, se abatira interiormente hasta ser el mismo parte de su hastio. Ahora bien, he aqui que el spleen no es una condicion que tenga consecuencias uniformes sobre los hombres: para algunos sera el fastidio, pero, a la inversa, para otros implicara el descubrimiento de caminos para el goce o la ociosidad. Una dosis de aburrimiento es necesaria en la vida, por ejemplo, para que los individuos resignifiquemos las cosas cotidianas, las utilicemos de otra forma, y exploremos en ellas aspectos divergentes."

First published posthumously in 1869, "Paris Spleen" is a collection of 51 short prose poems by Charles Baudelaire. Baudelaire was inspired by Aloysius Bertrand's "Gaspard de la Nuit-Fantaisies à la manière de Rembrandt et de Callot" or "Gaspard of the Night-Fantasies in the Manner of Rembrandt and Callot", commenting that he had read Bertrand's work at least twenty times for starting "Paris Spleen". A commentary on Parisian contemporary life, Baudelaire remarked on his work that "These are the flowers of evil again, but with more freedom, much more detail, and much more mockery." The themes present in "Paris Spleen" are wide-ranging. In a stream of consciousness style Baudelaire discusses pleasure, intoxication, artistry, women, poverty and social status, city life, religion, and morality. These little snapshots of daily life in the city of Paris capture the tumultuous time in which they were written, the middle of the 19th century, and establish "Paris Spleen" as a classic of the modernist literary movement.
