The Story of the FAO Library – 65th Anniversary 1952–2017 is a journey through the events that led to what has become one of the world’s finest collections of materials (both digital and print) on food, agriculture and international development. Today, the library is the depository of over one and a half million volumes, plus a collection of 400 rare books, 32 incunabula (books printed before 1501) and thousands of digital publications. Its origins lie in the International Institute of Agriculture (IIA), founded in Rome in 1905 by King Vittorio Emanuele III to defend and modernize agriculture, with the encouragement of David Lubin, an American citizen and passionate promoter of agricultural knowledge. Lubin committed to creating and developing the Institute’s library, soon the reference point for research centres, governments and other agencies specialized in agricultural matters. In the aftermath of World War II, the legacy of the IIA and its unique library were closely safeguarded by FAO. FAO’s library, which officially opened in 1952, was named after Lubin “in recognition of the foresight, leadership, and outstanding contribution … to international co-operation in the field of agriculture.” This publication unveils the library’s precious collections, ranging from those inherited from the Marquise Raffaele Cappelli, second President of the IIA, to the atlases, periodicals, yearbooks and even an edition of Alexander von Humboldt's Cosmos from the Centre International de Sylviculture collection. The publication's text is accompanied by photographs and images taken from the archives, showing rare pieces ranging from the incunabula to exquisite hand-drawn illustrations. And what about today? Already as of the 1970s, the library had embarked on digitalization, providing access to technologies and supporting libraries in some 90 developing countries via FAO's decentralized offices. As the book reveals, the Library continues to rise to the digital challenge, maintaining its pivotal role in knowledge dissemination.

Del lungo colloquio epistolare intrecciato tra il veronese Carlo Cipolla, professore di storia moderna prima a Torino e poi a Firenze, e il suo allievo degli anni torinesi Luigi Schiaparelli, restano più di quattrocento tra lettere e cartoline, in cui prevalgono, per ragioni di asimmetria comunicativa e accidenti conservativi, quelle dell’allievo al maestro. Più di un ventennio di dialogo per lettera (1894-1916), la cui pubblicazione offre ora un importante contributo di conoscenza sugli anni di apprendistato e l’esordio della carriera di Schiaparelli, il primo grande studioso moderno di diplomatica e paleografia che l’Italia abbia avuto, e sulle vicende contrastate dell’ultimo tratto della carriera di Cipolla. Ne risultano illuminati anche svariati aspetti della storia degli studi storici in Italia (e in parte in Germania) nei decenni tra l’Ottocento e il Novecento, fino allo spartiacque della prima guerra mondiale. La Società Napoletana di Storia Patria fu creata nel 1875 per volontà di alcuni politici e studiosi napoletani, mutuando la sua struttura dalle società storiche già sorte. Come gli altri istituti italiani, anche il sodalizio napoletano ebbe come primari interessi l’edizione di fonti, la difesa della propria autonomia, il tentativo di conciliare piccola e grande patria. Lo scopo era duplice: rafforzare il legame tra la popolazione e la dinastia sabauda ed evidenziare, tramite le memorie locali, il contributo dato al processo di nation building. Attraverso la ricostruzione biografica di alcuni membri della società storica napoletana, si comprende bene che nulla di ciò che accadeva in città era lontano dall’istituto: dal controllo dell’istruzione pubblica alla tutela dei monumenti, all’amministrazione degli enti di beneficenza. Pur essendoci già prestigiosi cenacoli culturali, la società storica seppe creare infatti un’ampia rete di rapporti, grazie anche al numero aperto delle iscrizioni e a una quota associativa tutto sommato accessibile. Le vicende di questo istituto, qui ricostruite dall’anno di fondazione al 1946 attraverso fonti documentarie inedite e una ricca bibliografia, si rivelano pertanto utili per chi voglia conoscere da vicino le dinamiche culturali del Mezzogiorno continentale all’indomani dell’Unità.
