A History of Capitalist Transformation: A Critique of Liberal-Capitalist Reforms highlights how, since the recent financial crises, the expression ‘liberal reform’ has entered common parlance as an evocative image of austerity and economic malaise, especially for the working classes and a segment of the middle class. But what exactly does ‘liberal reform’ refer to? The research analyzes the historical origins of liberal-capitalist reformism using a critical approach, starting with the origins of the Industrial Revolution. The book demonstrates that the chief purpose of such reforms was to integrate semi-peripheral states into the capitalist world-economy by imposing, both directly and indirectly, the adoption of rules, institutions, attitudes, and procedures amenable to economic and political interests of capitalist élites and hegemonic states – Britain first, the United States later – between the nineteenth and twenty-first centuries. As such, the reforms became an active tool used to promote social-economical-financial institutions, norms, and lifestyles typical of a liberal-capitalist economic order which locates some of its founding values in capital accumulation, profit-seeking, and social transformation. Tutto cambia dopo il Covid, ma non l’idolo-capitalismo. O meglio: ce lo teniamo e continuiamo ad “adorarlo” o a subirlo in una sua nuova variante. Il titolo del libello – che prosegue l’indagine iniziata con L’inconscio è il mondo là fuori – riecheggia e parodizza un noto versetto biblico: Non avrai altro Dio all’infuori di me (Es 20, 3). Lì si vuole significare il primato dell’inquantificabile, dell’invisibile, dell’incapitalizzabile, qui il senso è capovolto e invertito: “Non adorerai se non me che sono un idolo”, “Non avrai altro capitale all’infuori di me”, “io che non sono dio mi faccio dio, il tuo dio, e tu mi adori e mi adorerai per sempre per sempre per sempre”. Mentre il divino, il Mistero, la Vita (o quale sia il suo nome) è nel segno del dono, dell’abbondanza e dell’amore, l’idolo sta in quello della scarsità, del ricatto e della seduzione, travestiti da merito, da promozione e successo. Di fronte all’infuriare del «capitalocene», che è un regno della morte, un «thanatocene», l’intelligenza della vita dentro e fuori di noi ci chiama a un risveglio, a una nuova radicale mutazione, a un passaggio profondamente trasformativo. A un nuovo “esodo”, perché «dove c’è pericolo, cresce anche ciò che salva», ci sussurra il grande Holderlin.

La globalizzazione, tra eccessi e contraddizioni, limiti e fragilità, ha generato benessere, progresso scientifico, calo dei conflitti, creando la convinzione – rivelatasi illusoria – di essere inarrestabile e irreversibile. È invece in crisi profonda. Il legame virtuoso tra Stati Uniti e Cina, che l’ha favorita, è diventato rivalità strategica e potrebbe degenerare in conflitto. Nel “grande scollamento” in atto, Magnani identifica quattro forze che trasformano le relazioni internazionali: quelle di natura economica e tecnologica ridisegnano le catene globali del valore; dinamiche di politica interna favoriscono chiusure nel vano tentativo di proteggere interessi nazionali; gli shock esterni (pandemia, guerre, crisi finanziarie) mettono a nudo la vulnerabilità del sistema globale; obiettivi geopolitici alimentano le alleanze con paesi amici. In tale scenario la politica prevale sull’economia, cresce la regionalizzazione e aumenta l’instabilità delle alleanze internazionali, anche per il moltiplicarsi di paesi “battitori liberi” che aspirano a un’autonomia strategica. Oltre ai costi economici, la frammentazione favorisce il caos geopolitico e accresce il rischio di conflitti. Ma può anche innescare una globalizzazione secondo criteri economici e geopolitici diversi. Artico, Subacqueo, Spazio e Digitale possono essere fronti di scontro o, con le loro enormi opportunità, rappresentare le nuove frontiere della globalizzazione. Il mondo che verrà dipenderà molto dalle democrazie liberali e dalla loro capacità di promuovere i propri valori. La speranza è che il rilancio nella circolazione di merci, servizi, capitali, persone e conoscenza possa consolidare i diritti e diffondere le libertà.
