Studi ini meninjau aspek-aspek dalam konteks desain dan gaya hidup mengenai pelaksanaan ritual kematian yang dikonstruksi dalam terminologi perayaan kematian. Sepanjang peradaban manusia telah ditemukan peninggalan berupa artefak, kebudayaan dan sastra yang berhubungan dengan cara manusia memaknai kematian. Kematian sebagai bagian dari kehidupan dimaknai dengan berbagai cara. Pada studi ini, penulis mengungkap bagaimana manusia—secara khususnya masyarakat di Indonesia —merayakan kematian dengan berbagai cara. Cara-cara tersebut berhubungan dengan kepercayaan dan pola perayaan kematian. Perayaan kematian yang dipengaruhi hasrat untuk hadir, dikenali, dihormati, dan memosisikan diri atau golongan tertentu pada suatu tataran sosial budaya tertentu akhirnya memiliki kecenderungan untuk membentuk suatu kebiasaan yang mengarah pada suatu gaya hidup. Penulis mengkaji perayaan kematian dari berbagai filsafat kematian menurut berbagai pemikiran filsuf, psikologi kematian, perayaan kematian dalam sudut pandang kepercayaan/agama, dan studi kasus tentang peringatan kematian seperti pada prosesi mengantar roh orang mati (atman) menuju alam baka pada tradisi di Bali (ngaben), berita kematian pada surat kabar (obituary), hingga homology instrumentasi pendukung ”perayaan kematian” seperti atribut dan busana.
