The representation of visual space in Renaissance art was the expression of the worldview implicit in the Perspectivist analysis of sight, a worldview based upon the geometrization of visual space. If, however, Alhacen and his Perspectivist followers taught Renaissance artists to 'see' the world in such spatial terms, and thus to conceive it as a Euclidean continuum. Written evidence of this "Euclidean continuum" is interpretable in the writings of such well-known Renaissance masters as Alberti, Ghiberti and da Vinci, and equally important visual evidence is evident in the actual images created throughout the period. Alberti's most notable work, On Painting, c1435, for example, employs a model for vision taken directly from Ibn al-Haytham. (Greenstein 1997, p.682) validates a parallelism between Ibn al-Haytham and Alberti's respective models of vision by stating, "Alberti's viewer first sees under aspects [aspecimus]; then recognizes by intuition and finally discerns with greater discrimination. These stages of visual succession imply that Alberti understood spatial perception as a layered and complex cognitive process; one that must account for the perceptual tendencies the viewer applies as a means for interpreting any given scene. There is support for the idea as well that the "Euclidean continuum' informed Alberti' s understanding of the visual pyramid (Lindberg, 1981). The Euclidian solid geometry, attempted in the beginning to do more than replicate what the human eye perceives according to the tenets of Euclidian geometry, which medieval Europeans understood as synonymous with the vision of God. So since perspective pictures replicate geometrically to scale, they not only symbolize but also reproduce their subject matter point by point, so faithfully that from sucha model alone a lifelike three-dimensional copy could be reconstructed. In truth, the first Renaissance observers of linear perspective were so astounded that they excitedly proclaimed it a "miracle". Thus Western Renaissance art has influenced so many non-western cultures not because it is imperialistically imposed but because it works more convincingly more like natural perception than traditional, even locally accepted magic representations. The linear perspective permitted normal human perceive the third dimension by moving about in space, seeing and/ or touching solid objects from a jumble of aspects almost simultaneously, the notion of looking at the world or a picture of it from only a single viewpoint is artificial. E. H. GOMBRICH has argued that even though linear perspective is artificial, there is a natural urge in all humankind to make pictures that do match visual truth. The evolution of pictorial styles, in response to this natural desire, is really a matter of continually correcting individual cultural schema. That was the question's keys to understanding of the new logic of optical geometry done by Edgerton in his chapter about Alberti codification of linear perspective and the new perception that change completely the Western's optical geometry for centuries to come.
