Publikace se zabývá spisovnou výslovností anglického jazyka (tzv. RP) a její percepcí anglickými a českými mluvčími. Dále zkoumá role, které výslovnostní model plní v obou prostředích. Úvodní část práce předkládá diachronní i synchronní teoretický rámec, který vychází z bohaté současné i historické odborné literatury a analyzuje RP s využitím sociolingvistických pojmů, především z oblasti jazykové preskripce a standardizace. Praktická část je tvořena výzkumem, jenž byl proveden pomocí internetové stránky s 18 nahrávkami a doplňujícím dotazníkem. Tyto nahrávky byly evaluovány 20 anglickými a 20 českými respondenty. Výzkum se zabývá také sociolingvistickými kategoriemi, které pomáhají vytvářet ideový konstrukt spisovnosti.

The English contrast between fortis (i.e., /p t k/) and lenis plosives (i.e., /b d g/) is widely considered to depend on the presence or absence of aspiration. English is thus generally thought of as an "aspirating language," as opposed to a "voicing language." This thesis describes a study in which English listeners from across Canada rated Marathi plosives and provides results contradicting the analysis of English as an aspirating language. Native listeners of an aspirating language would be expected to rate Marathi voiceless unaspirated and voiced aspirated stops as respectively lenis and somewhat fortis-like. However, these English listeners rated them as respectively ambiguous and somewhat lenis-like. This suggests that voicing and aspiration are of similar importance to one another, contradicting the view that English is an aspirating language and, further, suggesting that English speakers may be better positioned to learn non-native laryngeal contrasts than has been thought.

Abstract: Learners L1 background can be one of the many factors affecting the acquisition of L2 phonology. This thesis examines native Armenian, Japanese, and English speakers weighting of acoustic cues, specifically vowel spectrum and duration, in production and perception of English high front tense-lax vowel contrasts. For the production experiment, participants (N = 28) were recorded producing three repetitions of 12 monosyllabic minimal pairs of [i] and [I] vowels in a carrier sentence which were acoustically measured for vowel length, and spectrum: vowel height (F1 - F0) and vowel frontness (F2 - F1). For perception experiment, two equal 7-step continua were created [beat-bit] by linear interpolation of vowel duration and spectrum. The data were examined through a series of ANOVAs and paired sample t-tests. Consistent with previous findings, spectral properties were given more weight by native speakers, while nonnative speakers were found to weigh duration more heavily than spectrum, suggesting L1 influence on L2 cue weighting strategies.

Lip rounding enhances the distinction between the fricative sounds "s" (as in “save”) and "sh" (as in “shave”) in English. However, this distinction is not common throughout world languages. How well are learners of English able to utilize lip rounding to distinguish these two sounds in their production and perception? Is the ability to utilize lip rounding in this distinction related to overall audiovisual integration in speech perception, as measured by the McGurk effect? Does this ability develop over time? Fourteen English language learners and 14 native speakers of English participated in three tasks to explore these questions. A fricative production task and fricative perception task were used to evaluate the ability to use lip rounding to distinguish "s" and "sh". A McGurk perceptual task was utilized to determine the degree of audiovisual integration in speech perception. Non-native speaker participants also completed a second session to evaluate development over time. Overall, the English language learners showed high proficiency in both production and perception, suggesting effective use of lip rounding in making the distinction. Development of perceptual ability also occurred between the two sessions. Reaction time patterns differed between the learners and native participants in all perception tasks, suggesting distinct strategies in dealing with audiovisual integration in speech perception.

The purpose of this study is to measure the intelligibility of Cameroon English speech to British and American English speakers and vice versa, and to analyse the major causes of intelligibility failure when speakers of these varieties of English interact. Focus is on segmental and supra-segmental phonology. The study was motivated by a number of concerns: the trepidation nursed by some scholars that the emergence of non-native varieties around the world would cause English to disintegrate into mutually unintelligible varieties in the way Romance languages devolved from their Latin ancestors; the fact that previous studies on intelligibility were centred on the traditional approach which considers non-native varieties of English to be deficient, and not different from native varieties and the debate on the level of phonological analysis that is considered the greatest threat to intelligibility between native and non-native speakers. Based on an innovative corpus-based approach, this book offers a comprehensive survey of the phonological and phonetic properties of L2 speech in English and German. The first part of the book critically examines current theoretical models and research methodologies in the field of second language acquisition of phonology and describes the advances that have been made in corpus linguistics over the past few years - in particular, the development of phonological learner corpora. It furthermore presents the first learner corpus of L2 English and L2 German that is fully aligned and has extensive phonological annotations: the LeaP corpus. The second part of the book describes the results of the quantitative and qualitative corpus analyses in the following areas of non-native speech: fluency, final consonant cluster realisation, vowel reduction and speech rhythm, intonation and general foreign accent.
