There has been a significant increase in the number of English speakers globally, with the majority of them being non-native speakers who rely on diverse varieties of the language. Throughout its history, English has been disseminated through a number of processes, ranging from colonialism to globalisation. This has ultimately resulted in the formation of various relationships between English and target communities. English has also spread to countries where Muslims constitute the majority of the population. As religious teachings are embedded in local or national cultures, and thus result in non-homogeneous Islamic communities across the globe, it is a frequently used oversimplification to conclude that English consistently stands in opposition to Islam in every Islamic society. Given such misperceptions, studies directed towards perceptions of English in Indonesia, the fourth most populated country and the largest Muslim community in the world, are particularly important. This book examines a variety of perceptions of English in this context, focusing on staff and students at universities in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Five research questions were used as the basis for conducting this study, which analyse the themes of English and its acceptance in Indonesia; English at the tertiary level; the roles of English; English in relation to identity; and the perception of World Englishes. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study was carried out at nine public and private universities with differing religious viewpoints – namely, secular, Catholic, and Islamic. There are five different groups of participants for individual interviews and questionnaire surveys: students, English language lecturers, non-English lecturers, and leaders at each of the nine universities. The results reveal that English is viewed as a tool and asset for advancing knowledge, facilitating international communication, gaining global competitiveness, and improving employment opportunities. However, perceived tensions between English and Indonesian constantly occur throughout all facets of the study. Even though Indonesian people’s “repository of cultural identity” (Tan and Rubdy, 2008, p. 5) is located within local languages rather than in Indonesian as the national language, the Indonesian language actually unites them as one people and differentiates them from people of other nations. This suggests a demand for a “contemporary global linguistic ecology” (Phillipson and Skutnabb-Kangas, 1999, p. 20). In such ecology, English would keep developing in a way that does not impact negatively on the national language. Indeed, such demand for a balance between English and Indonesian is politically desirable.

Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study was carried out at nine public and private universities of different 'aromas' - secular, Catholic, and Islamic. There are five different groups of participants for individual interviews and questionnaire surveys. The first four groups are for individual semi-structured interviews, which include one student, one English language lecturer, one non-English lecturer, and one to two leaders at each of the nine universities. Meanwhile, the last group consists of 27-41 students at each university as questionnaire participants. The data is analysed in both qualitative and quantitative manners.Indeed, this research is of significant importance as it makes various contributions. The first contribution is to the discipline of English as an International Language (EIL). Secondly, it contributes to the development of Indonesian tertiary level education. Moreover, it is also beneficial to the countries surrounding Indonesia, including Australia. This is related to the fact that Australia and Indonesia are neighbours in both an intimate and non-intimate manner and also because Australia is one of the main destinations for Indonesians pursuing higher studies following their bachelor degrees in Indonesia. The results reveal that English is viewed as a tool and asset for advancing knowledge, facilitating international communication, gaining global competitiveness, and improving employment opportunities. This research is based on a qualitative study conducted in Puerto Rico, with ten middle school students. They answered questions relating to their perceptions about learning English as a second language under colonial conditions in Puerto Rico. Participants also analyzed, challenged and constructed their own meanings concerning the images and content in the stories contained within U.S. made textbooks utilized in their English class. Moreover, they had the opportunity to discuss, and contest images of themselves as Latinos portrayed in English stories written by both Puerto Rican and non-Puerto Rican authors. The Case Study research method, encouraged the inclusion of the researcher's personal perspective into the interpretation; allowing reflection on both my role as an ESL teacher and on my personal educational philosophy while discussing English language issues from the students' perspective. English is a compulsory subject that students love, hate, and also resist in the educational system in Puerto Rico. A critical pedagogical perspective provided the participants the opportunity to challenge the agenda of the U.S. dominant culture promoting the ESL program in Puerto Rico.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,0, University of Würzburg (Neuphilologisches Institut – Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: Bachelorarbeit, language: English, abstract: The research question of this thesis is how sociodemographic variables affect the perception of English in German Advertising. "English seems to be surrounded by an aura that the German language is apparently missing". With regard to advertising in Germany, it becomes difficult to disagree with this statement by Schlüter. For several decades anglicisms and English expressions have been used for promotional purposes in television-, print-, and online-advertising. "Professional Hair Care for you", "Powered by Emotion" and "Driven by Instinct" are only a few of the many popular slogans in Germany. The "aura" has been utilized by companies in multiple industries for many years resulting in a consistent growth in the number of anglicisms and English expressions used in the past. This quantitative increase has been exhibited by many researchers, most notably by Schütte. She concluded that from 1951 until 1991 the amount of anglicisms in the slogans, headlines and continuous texts of her corpus of print advertisements grew by over 400%. In her corpus Slogans featured an especially high increase of anglicisms, growing from 5 in 1951 to 153 in 1991. Meder came to similar realization, denoting a great increase of anglicisms used in selected German men’s and women’s magazines in the years 1983, 1993 and 2003. This trend of anglicisms and English expressions being incorporated into the German language – and also advertising – is presumed to continue with the number of expressions deriving from the English language increasing. Hence, the quantitative presence of the English language in German advertising is virtually undeniable. However, advertising is a form of communication in which the advertiser’s objective is to generate a certain attitude within the recipient towards the advertising object. Thus, it is of substantial value to understand who perceives advertising containing English in the way the advertiser wishes it to be perceived. Past studies that have dealt with the perception of English and anglicisms in advertising oftentimes merely focused on the factor of comprehension. Researchers concluded that the positive perception of English correlated with the person’s command of English. Hence, the question remains who perceives the "aura" of the English language in advertising and which variables influence their respective perception.

Abstract: Numerous studies have been conducted on speech perception of English as a second language (ESL) by learners who live in English-speaking countries. However, little is known about learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) who have limited exposure to native English on a daily basis. With more access to higher education, better employment opportunities and wider interpersonal networks, increasing number of Chinese speakers have been motivated to study English as a foreign language. The present study examined Mandarin EFL learners' ability to perceive English phonemes and sentences. In addition, we investigated the influence of linguistic variables including proficiency in English, the amount of exposure to English and the amount of English use on Mandarin EFL learners' perception of English. Finally how segmental perception could influence sentence recognition in noise was also examined. Sixty adult native Mandarin Chinese EFL speakers with relatively high proficiency in English were recruited. Vowel perception was assessed using a vowel identification test and sentence recognition thresholds (SRTs) were obtained using the Hearing in Noise Test (HINT). Information on language background was collected using the Language Experience and Proficiency Questionnaire (LEAP-Q). Results showed that none of the Mandarin EFL speakers achieved native-like perception of English vowels and sentences. However, better performance was found among those with higher proficiency in English. In the vowel identification test, the English vowels /eɪ/ and /i/ were relatively better perceived than others by Mandarin EFL speakers. Furthermore, consistent confusions of the contrasts /ae/-/ɛ/, /ɑ/-/ʌ/, and /u/-/ʊ/ were observed. Correlation analyses showed no significant relationship of exposure and usage factors with performance. Significant correlation of vowel identification and sentence recognition was observed among listeners with relatively less exposure and usage of EFL (r = .78), but not among listeners with higher exposure and usage of EFL. In conclusion, results of vowel identification suggested that Mandarin EFL speakers' perception of English phonemes was interfered by their first language. The influences of exposure and usage on perceptual ability seemed to depend on an early age of learning English and sufficient immersion in English environments. Segmental perception affected higher-level recognition, but only for EFL learners with little exposure and usage. It indicated that these learners might rely more on bottom-up information while learners with greater exposure and usage might have made better use of top-down processing. These findings provided empirical evidence of how EFL speakers perceived English phonemes and sentences, and provided insights into application of ESL models to predict the ability to understand speech, particularly in noise, among EFL speakers.
