Annotation This work focuses specifically on the literature of the last one hundred years. It shows how Portuguese orientalism at the turn of the last century, while not ignoring 'orientalist' influences from Northern Europe, became woven into the perception writers had of their own country's history, the discoveries Portugal had pioneered, and its declining international role. The fiction, poetry and travel writing of authors who lived in or visited Macau, invariably view China through the prism of Portugal's past history, even though, between the end of the nineteenth as at the end of the twentieth century, new issues of gender and ethnicity and the emergence of a small Eurasian intelligentsia in Macau had lent variety to the literature. This volume examines work by Camilo Pessanha, Eca de Queiros, Miguel Torga, Deolinda da Conceicao, Maria Ondina Braga, Henrique de Senna Fernandes, and Rodrigo Leal de Carvalho.

From the first Chinese coolies that migrated to the former Portuguese colonies more than 100 years ago, to the current investments along the Belt and Road Initiative, we take the pulse of this historic, social, political and economic presence and flows, that continues to renew and reinvent itself in the face of the challenges of contemporaneity.

Theorising the Ibero-American Atlantic offers a fresh look at the Atlantic turn in Ibero-American Studies. Taking the criticisms launched at Atlantic Studies as a starting point, contributors query and explore the viability of the Ibero-American Atlantic as a framework of research. Their essays take stock of theories, methodologies, debates and trends in recent scholarship, and set down pathways for future research. As a result, the contributions in this volume establish the historical reality of the Ibero-American Atlantic as well as its tremendous value for scholarship. Contributors are Vanda Anastácio, Francisco Bethencourt, Harald E. Braun, David Brookshaw, Jorge Cañizares-Esguerra, Daniela Flesler, Andrew Ginger, Eliga Gould, David Graizbord, Thomas Harrington, Luis Martín-Cabrera, José C. The Bewitching Braid, set in Macau in the 1930s, is a tale of forbidden love between a Macanese boy from a privileged family in the 'Christian' city and a beautiful water-seller from the 'Chinese' quarter of Cheok Chai Un. Against a background of small-town prejudice, the story traces the trials and tribulations of the couple in their attempts to be accepted in their respective communities and to understand each other across their cultural divides. The novel is a look into the inner world of the Eurasian inhabitants of the city, and their relationship with their Chinese and Portuguese legacies. Here, Senna Fernandes depicts the emergence of a new, more liberal Macao, in which its Portuguese and Chinese traditions are harmonized by true love. The original Portuguese version, A Tranca Feiticeira, was made into a successful film in 1997.

Macao, the former Portuguese colony in southeast China from the 1550s until its return to China in 1999, has a long and very interesting history of cultural interaction between China and the West. As an entity with independent political power and a unique social setting and cultural development, the identity of Macao’s people is not only indicative of the legacy and influence of the region’s socio-historical factors and forces, but it has also been altered, transformed and maintained because of the input, action, interaction and stimulation of creative arts and literatures. Held together by racial accommodation and tolerance and active cultural interactions, Macao’s phenomenon can be characterized as hybridization. This book is a presentation of the ongoing hybridization of Macao and is in itself a hybrid, covering a wide range of issues. Putting forward substantial new research findings, the book explores the nature of cultural interaction in Macao, and how the city has been constructed and perceived through literature and other art forms. It is a companion volume to Macao – The Formation of a Global City .

This monograph provides an analysis and contextualization of an extraordinarily successful book, the History of the Great Kingdom of China (Rome 1585), by the Spanish Augustinian friar Juan González de Mendoza (1545–1618). Within a few years, this book had reached 30 editions and had been translated into several languages, including English. Mendoza’s chronicle shaped the late Renaissance interpretation of China across Europe. It had its origin in an embassy to emperor Wanli of China sent by Philip II, ruler of the Spanish and Portuguese overseas empires in America and Asia. Reconstructing the biography of González de Mendoza with new sources, this volume offers a systematic study of his account of late Ming China, analyzing its reception and influence both in Spain and elsewhere in Europe. The Chronicler of China is divided into five chapters, covering the Portuguese and Castilian sources that recorded the earliest contacts with China in the sixteenth century, the figure of Mendoza as an ethnographical and political writer, the building of his chronicle on China, the dialogue with his sources and, finally, the footprint of Mendoza’s book in the European Republic of Letters. This book, the most complete study on the Augustinian Mendoza and his historical and ethnographical work to date, contributes to a wider understanding of the Iberian contribution to sixteenth-century travel writing and the Western knowledge of China. It will appeal to scholars and students alike interested in the early modern interpretation of China in Europe.

Macau History And Society written by Zhidong Hao and has been published by Hong Kong University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-01-01 with History categories.

Macau History and Society illuminates the early Portuguese maritime exploration along China's south coast, political and economic development in Macau, and current social problems. The book makes significant contributions to a political sociology of Macau, emphasizing how different civilizations and cultures interacted with one another, and explores how a new Macau identity can be constructed. Democratization has been a never-ending process in Macau since the 1500's. Macau's experience indicates that sovereignty has been shared rather than exclusive. Although civilizations and cultures do clash, they also cooperate. But the Macau model is deeply flawed - Hao contends that Macau needs to build a new multicultural identity, and a cosmopolitan political and economic identity.
