The research goal was to investigate perceptions of academic advising support system on undergraduate engineering student and to find potential pros and cons that could be improve with in the academic advising provided to engineering students. Engineering programmers have a low retention rate and cannot meet national demand. Academic advising is essential within higher education institutes. Academic advising aims to support and retain students throughout their learning process and experiences. The advisory roles played by faculty or a professional advisor in tandem to support students' education and ensure their progress. A sold academic advising program is very crucial to engineering students because it helps support not only students' goals and success but also determine its attainment. The role of the advisor seems straightforward; however, advisors often assist students with identifying the best major that fits their ability, discuss a potential minor, providing curriculum information, scheduling courses, explaining certificates, internships, and steering students to campus resources. The framework used in this research by Lee and Matusovich, (2016) model of co-curricular support for undergraduate engineering students. Engineering students' perceptions (thought process and experiences) of academic advising support systems considered as a measurement scale within the faculty and staff interactions. This scale contributes to allowing researchers and practitioners a better understanding of academic advising support systems for engineering students. The sample consisted of 79 undergraduate engineering students at Youngstown State University during Fall 2019. Findings reveal regions where engineering students are satisfied with support service provided. College year classification (freshman, sophomore, junior and senior) had significant differences were among engineering students' classification. Juniors and seniors are most satisfied with the academic advising provided. Significant differences found among engineering male students and engineering female students were males are most satisfied with academic advising provided. Advising support delivery systems, descriptive statistical analysis reveals students' most and least selected type of advising delivery system. By utilizing the results of engineering students' perceptions of academic advising, we can establish recommendations for improvements in academic advising for engineering programs. It also suggested further research on academic and social interactions with advisors and peers, both academically and socially; interactions with and involving learning centers; and inclusion within varied program(s).

In the dynamic educational environment, college and university leaders are feeling more pressure from federal and state funding agencies to justify the rising cost in college education. A major influence in student success is the ability of students to develop attainable educational and career goals. College administrators put academic advisors in place to help shape and advance these goals and to give students additional support. A strong emphasis is put on the importance of academic advising. The research study sought to examine what can be learned from individual interviews with exemplar academic advisors to improve the academic advising process. The research study specifically explored how exemplar faculty's perceptions of academic advising impact the advising process at North Atlantic Technical College (pseudonym). To answer this question, the exemplar advisors detailed their perceptions of the tools, training, and education they have and use toward carrying out the advising process. Participants also described what barriers and supports are in place to determine how their perceptions of academic advising impact the outcome at North Atlantic Technical College. The research design used was an interview-based basic qualitative study to build on previous studies of academic advising by reviewing the literature on what should happen throughout the advising process and which skills and tools the advisor uses to assist students in navigating through academic, career, and personal objectives. Findings within the study identify advisor perceptions of the academic advising process and bridge the gaps between understanding and inefficiency in the advising processes. Applying such understanding may prove advantageous for both students and advisors by (1) elevating retention for the college/university, and (2) successfully guiding the student toward earning a college degree.

Engineering undergraduate students have opinions and perceptions of engineering disciplines and engineering undergraduate students do not always matriculate and graduate in precisely the same discipline. Understanding how these two characteristics of engineering undergraduate students interact to inform behaviors is important for engineering educators and administrators to increase and improve recruitment and retention among their students. This dissertation approached each characteristic of engineering students, first separately and then together. A nationwide survey of undergraduate engineering students found significant differences in how students perceive various engineering disciplines along several paired-term anchored scales. These differences were equally significant when scores were considered in terms of discipline-membership. Membership was found to lead to higher scores for Difficulty and Friendliness compared to scores of non-members for any given specific discipline. Using historical data, transfer paths of students into, out of, or within engineering were identified by frequency of occurrence as either the origin of a transfer or the destination of a transfer. Industrial Engineering was found to be considerably more frequently experienced as a destination of transfers, regardless of whether the origin degree program was another engineering discipline or from outside of engineering. Conversely, Aerospace Engineering was considerably more frequently experienced as an origin of transfers. Additionally, the transfer path relationship between Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering was investigated. Combining these two characteristics of engineering students-that of having opinions of engineering disciplines and that of having the potential to transfer between degree programs- an ethnographic research methodology was implemented. Factors unrelated to grade performance were identified as common program-change instigators, including personal interest considerations and predicted career opportunities. Ultimately, this dissertation contributes to an understanding of how perceptions of engineering disciplines and degree program transfer behavior affects undergraduate engineering student experiences.

Enrollment in distance higher education programs has grown tremendously over the past 20 years and continues to grow today at a rate faster than main campus programs. Higher education institutions are responsible for providing support services that encourage student success and satisfaction in distance programs. Distance students have different characteristics than traditional campus enrollees including being older, more likely to be employed, and more likely to be supporting a family (Burke, 2017). Research has shown that students who integrate into their higher education experience by engaging with peers, faculty, and staff have more successful outcomes than those who do not (Astin, 1984; Pascarella & Terenzini, 2005; Tinto, 1993). Academic advising is one student services component that is well suited for engagement with students and providing an avenue toward a meaningful relationship that promotes successful outcomes. Students with strong relationships with an academic advisor are more informed, prepared, motivated, confident, and have a greater sense of belonging (Kyte, Collins, & Deil-Amen, 2020; Powell, Demetriou, & Fischer, 2013; Smith & Allen, 2014). Understanding this relationship in a distance setting provides pathways to better student support services and outcomes.This research used a qualitative single case study method to explore the relationships between engineering distance students and academic advisors. Through interviews with 17 current students and review of seven advising-related documents, I sought to better understand how and why distance students build relationships with academic advisors through the three pillars of Moore's Transactional Distance Theory structure, dialogue, and autonomy. Students experienced advising structures through orientation, required advising, and advisor availability. The advisor and students created dialogue through the modes of communication used, proactive outreach, advisor attitude, and personalization. Students viewed themselves as highly autonomous but still needed an advisor to balance academic and personal responsibilities, to work through unforeseen situations, and for confirming information.

This monograph provides college academic administrators, institutional researchers, professional and learned societies, and academic advisors with information to improve understanding of the paths students take through engineering programs in higher education. The evidence used in this study comes principally from the 11-year college transcript history (1982-1993) of the High School & Beyond/Sophomore Cohort Longitudinal Study, as well as the high school transcripts, test scores, and surveys of this nationally representative sample. This is the first national tracking study of students in any undergraduate discipline that identifies attempted major fields from the empirical evidence of college transcripts. A "curricular threshold" of engineering was defined, and the careers of students described with reference to that threshold. While 16 long-term "destinations" of students who reached the threshold are identified, they are collapsed into four for purposes of analysis: (1) thresholders, who never moved beyond the requisite entry courses; (2) migrants, who crossed the threshold of the engineering path, began to major in enginering, but switched to other fields or left college altogether; (3) completers, some of whom continued on to graduate school by age 30; and (4) two-year-only students, whose college experience was confined principally to engineering tech programs in community colleges. Findings are presented in seven parts: (1) "Engineering Paths as Established by Students"; (2) "The Content of Their Curriculum"; (3) "Engineering and Science: Confusing Signs along the Path"; (4) "Antecedents of the Engineering Path"; (5) "Choosing the Engineering Path"; (6) "Learning Engineering: Migration and Traffic"; and (7) "Experiencing Engineering: Classroom Environments, Credit Loads, and Grades." A concluding section presnts suggestions for changing the image of engineering among high school students and potential college majors, particularly women. Suggestions are also provided to other disciplines for undertaking similar tracking studies, particularly in fields where men have been a distinct minority. Contains 131 references and an appendix.
