(Uncorrected OCR) Abstract of thesis entitled Auditory Perceptual Learning of Breathy Voice Quality in Naive Listeners Based on an Exemplar and Prototype Approach Submitted by Karen Chan Man Kei for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in March 2005 Past studies have proposed a number of methods for improving the reliability in perceptual voice evaluation. These methods include the use of anchors, training and analysis-by-synthesis. These methods are based on the theoretical framework on processing voice quality first proposed by Kreiman et al. in 1993. Kreiman et al. (1993) proposed that when listeners evaluate voice quality, they would compare the external stimulus with their internal representations of voice quality. Past studies that explored these proposed methods have reported a wide range of reliability and no universal agreement on how to improve the reliability in perceptual voice evaluation has been reached. One possible explanation for the variable reliability reported could be because the theoretical framework proposed by Kreiman et al (1993) was only able to address some of the processes involved in perceptual voice evaluation. One of the processes that have not been widely studied is the formation of the internal representations of voice quality. Two main theories, the exemplar and prototype approaches, on the formation of internal representations have been proposed in the past. However, most studies that investigated these theories were not based on processing of voice quality. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of two programs that trained naive listeners to perceive subtle differences in aspiration noise. Each of the training programs was based on either the exemplar approach (reference-matching training program) or the prototype approach (paired comparison training program). The framework proposed by Kreiman et al. (1993) was expanded based on the findings from this study. Thirty male and 30 female naive.

This book presents a comprehensive review of how acoustic waves are processed by the auditory system into structured sounds such as musical melodies, speech utterances, or environmental sounds. After an introduction, an overview is given of how the ears distribute acoustic information over a large array of frequency channels that contain the auditory information used by the central nervous system to generate a mental image of what is happening around the listener. This process, called auditory scene analysis, consists of two stages. In the first stage, auditory units are formed such as musical tones and speech syllables. Each auditory unit is perceived at a well-defined moment in time, the beat location of that auditory unit. Moreover, from this process of auditory-unit formation, the auditory attributes of these auditory units emerge, such as their timbre, their pitch, their loudness, and their perceived location. Each of these attributes is discussed in the corresponding chapter. In the second stage of auditory scene analysis, auditory-stream formation, the successive auditory units are integrated into auditory streams, i.e., temporally structured sequences of auditory units that are perceived as emanating from one and the same sound source. Examples of such auditory streams are musical melodies and the utterances of one speaker. The temporal structure of an auditory stream, its rhythm, is determined by the beat locations of its auditory units. The role played by the auditory attributes of the consecutive auditory units is discussed. The melodies of musical streams and the intonation contours of spoken utterances emerge from this process. In music, the beats of parallel streams generally fit into a metric pattern, and, depending on harmony, simultaneous tones can be perceived as consonant or dissonant. Finally, the book contains many sound examples including the MATLAB scripts with which they are generated.

Research in linguistics, as in most other scientific domains, is usually approached in a modular way – narrowing the domain of inquiry in order to allow for increased depth of study. This is necessary and productive for a topic as wide-ranging and complex as human language. However, precisely because language is a complex system, tied to perception, learning, memory, and social organization, the assumption of modularity can also be an obstacle to understanding language at a deeper level. This book examines the consequences of enforcing non-modularity along two dimensions: the temporal, and the cognitive. Along the temporal dimension, synchronic and diachronic domains are linked by the requirement that sound changes must lead to viable, stable language states. Along the cognitive dimension, sound change and variation are linked to speech perception and production by requiring non-trivial transformations between acoustic and articulatory representations. The methodological focus of this work is on computational modeling. By formalising and implementing theoretical accounts, modeling can expose theoretical gaps and covert assumptions. To do so, it is necessary to formally assess the functional equivalence of specific implementational choices, as well as their mapping to theoretical structures. This book applies this analytic approach to a series of implemented models of sound change. As theoretical inconsistencies are discovered, possible solutions are proposed, incrementally constructing a set of sufficient properties for a working model. Because internal theoretical consistency is enforced, this model corresponds to an explanatorily adequate theory. And because explicit links between modules are required, this is a theory, not only of sound change, but of many aspects of phonological competence. The book highlights two aspects of modeling work that receive relatively little attention: the formal mapping from model to theory, and the scalability of demonstration models. Focusing on these aspects of modeling makes it clear that any theory of sound change in the specific is impossible without a more general theory of language: of the relationship between perception and production, the relationship between phonetics and phonology, the learning of linguistic units, and the nature of underlying representations. Theories of sound change that do not explicitly address these aspects of language are making tacit, untested assumptions about their properties. Addressing so many aspects of language may seem to complicate the linguist's task. However, as this book shows, it actually helps impose boundary conditions of ecological validity that reduce the theoretical search space.

"This dissertation focuses on the broad question of how humans make sense of speech and interpret it as meaningful units, despite extensive variation - one instance of humans' remarkable ability to perceive cognitive units (speech sounds) from noisy continuous data. This dissertation addresses this question by examining different levels of human speech processing, from low-level phonetics to higher-level abstract patterning: listeners' variable use of acoustic cues in different linguistic contexts (Project 1), the perceptual representation integrating all acoustic dimensions for a phonological contrast (Project 2), and the linguistic knowledge used for processing phonological changes (Project 3).The first project investigates how multiple acoustic cues contribute to multidimensional phonological contrasts and how dialectal experience shapes listeners' perceptual strategies. The central question is: how do listeners differ in their use of acoustic cues? This project focuses on three cues in the tonal register contrast in two Chinese Wu dialects: pitch height, voice quality, and pitch contour. The findings reveal that listeners differ mainly in their overall cue acuity. Moreover, for certain contrasts signaled without a dominant cue, individuals further differ in their choice of the primary cue. Finally, listeners' use of cues is affected by their dialect background. For a cue less important in their native dialect, listeners do not make better use of it even when the cue becomes more salient in the same contrast.The second project investigates a similar question to the first project, using computational modelling. The goals are to study the low-dimensional representation of tones in Mandarin Chinese continuous speech, and how different acoustic correlates map onto this representation. Adopting a data-driven method using raw speech, this project explores the representation of tones by examining a low-dimensional layer learnt in a deep neural network tone classification model. The model can be seen as an `ideal listener' doing the same task as human listeners. Unlike the human brain which can only be indirectly probed through responses, the computational model provides a learnt representation one can directly examine. The analysis of the representation reveals that while the input is high-dimensional (feature vectors encoding raw speech), two dimensions are enough to represent the tonal contrast. The two dimensions largely encode average pitch height and pitch contour, which converges with previous findings from the perception literature.The third project investigates the role of phonological knowledge in speech perception. For predictable changes caused by phonological assimilation (English place assimilation and French voicing assimilation), native listeners are able to recover the original sounds, without taking them as mispronunciations. This project investigates what knowledge is minimally required for the language-specific perceptual effect. Standard automatic speech recognition systems trained on English and French are used to represent `ideal listeners'. Each language has 13 models with different complexities to represent listeners with different scopes of linguistic knowledge. The models then perform the same task as humans did in a previous study (Darcy et al., 2009). From comparing the model and human results, the successful human-like models employ contextually sensitive acoustic knowledge and phonotactics, but do not require higher-level knowledge of a lexicon or word boundaries.To summarize, this dissertation investigates different aspects of perception, building on evidence from diverse languages. The combination of perceptual experiments and computational modelling mutually benefit each other: the perceptual experiments examine how listeners vary and provide empirical data from human listeners, while computational modelling of `ideal listeners' offers potential explanations for human speech perception"--
