Nel settembre del 1988 una giovane Nathalie Heinich fa visita ad Harald Szeemann nel suo studio sul Monte Verità. Heinich è lì per intervistarlo, vuole trovare conferma a un’intuizione: la figura del curatore è sempre più assimilabile a quella di autore e nessuno può dirlo meglio di Szeemann, che realizza mostre da trent’anni e ha ridefinito le pratiche curatoriali secondo una metodologia personale. Szeemann è stato il più giovane direttore di museo alla Kunsthalle di Berna, poi segretario generale di documenta 5 a Kassel. Ma è diventato un mito con la folgorante “When Attitude Becomes Form”, la mostra che nel ’69 ha rappresentato per lui una catarsi, una rottura con il passato in nome di un’estetica nuova. Nel panorama dei curatori-autori Szeemann è il “caso singolare”. Questa singolarità è data da un profilo individuale insostituibile, che si scosta dai sentieri già battuti per inseguire le proprie intuizioni spostando l’asse dal valore ufficiale delle opere alla natura quasi sentimentale del rapporto con l’artista e con la materia da esporre. Il curatore-autore si affida unicamente al proprio sesto senso, alle proprie ossessioni: rifiuta di fare “carriera” per occuparsi di temi che è l’unico a potere trattare. La difesa della singolarità plasma i contenuti delle singole mostre, ma anche il nesso logico fra una mostra e l’altra, fino a formare un insieme che assume sempre più l’aspetto di una grande opera personale, sorretta da un’intima necessità, alimentata dalle circostanze di una traiettoria biografica e non già dal caso o dalle imposizioni di un programma istituzionale.
