Il tema dei rapporti artistici tra Roma e Madrid è stato affrontato inizialmente soprattutto in termini stilistici, concentrando l’attenzione, in particolare per quanto concerne il Seicento, sui rapporti tra Caravaggio e Velázquez. Negli ultimi decenni si è sviluppato un filone di studi che, senza trascurare il problema del linguaggio artistico, ha dedicato attenzione a molti altri pittori, ma anche a scultori e architetti e a problematiche come quelle della committenza, del collezionismo e dei rapporti tra arte, politica e diplomazia. Questo volume, che vede la partecipazione non solo di storici dell’arte, raccoglie i frutti più maturi di questo percorso. L’approccio interdisciplinare, che caratterizza i saggi qui pubblicati, mette in luce la complessità e ricchezza dei rapporti tra i due paesi. Nell’ambito delle sfaccettate relazioni tra l’Italia e la Spagna in epoca moderna, Roma e Madrid furono certamente i luoghi privilegiati degli incontri e degli scambi. Il volume, ricco di novità, getta nuova luce su un mondo affascinante, con originali scoperte, che arricchiscono la nostra conoscenza dei rapporti tra le due corti. Alessandra Anselmi è specializzata nello studio dei rapporti storico-artistici tra l’Italia e la Spagna in epoca moderna e insegna Storia dell’Arte Moderna presso l’Università della Calabria. Painting as Business in Early Seventeenth-Century Rome offers a new perspective on the world of painting in Rome at the beginning of the Baroque, from both an artistic and a socioeconomic point of view. Biased by the accounts of seventeenth-century biographers, who were often academic painters concerned about elevating the status of their profession, art historians have long believed that in Italy, and in Rome in particular, paintings were largely produced by major artists working on commission for the most important patrons of the time. I saggi qui raccolti vorrebbero, in questo senso, sottrarsi alla semplice definizione di “studi di storia dell’arte”, aspirando a essere, nella loro prospettiva interdisciplinare, indagini su come l’uomo ha organizzato in piena coscienza, nel corso del tempo e in epoche diverse, la propria “autorappresentazione” culturale, confidando che l’opera d’arte non sia solo un campo di sperimentazione della forma e del colore in rapporto alla visione, bensì anche e soprattutto una cosciente e volontaria rappresentazione del sistema dei valori e delle conoscenze dell’uomo, e in ultimo delle sue aspirazioni, non dimenticando che l’arte è soglia da cui non si può, ma si deve accedere allo spazio del “sacro”. L’arte non è solo esperienza del “vedere” o del “sentire”, come anche, certamente, del “sapere”, ma soprattutto dell’Essere. Verso la metà dell'anno 1606, proprio nel momento in cui Caravaggio fugge via da Roma, il suo acerrimo nemico Giovanni Baglione, autore delle celebri Vite che immortaleranno la Roma artistica del primo Seicento, mette mano a un'opera redatta in uno stile prossimo a quello del rivale, dall'iconografia potente quanto inedita: si tratta di una pala d'altare – rinvenuta solo lo scorso anno – raffigurante san Giovanni Evangelista che indica la luce della grazia divina a san Pietro, il quale, facendo quotidiana penitenza col suo pianto, cerca di espiare il tremendo peccato del rinnegamento di Cristo. L'analisi del quadro, che fu commissionato dal cardinale Paolo Sfondrati o da suo fratello, il duca di Montemarciano Ercole I, e che affronta di petto il problema della definizione del fondamentale sacramento della penitenza nel rispetto dei canoni del Concilio di Trento, permette all'Autore di indagare sia l'iconografia del pentimento e della penitenza di Pietro sia gli altri dipinti che Baglione, in quello stesso torno di tempo e poi anche più tardi, dedicò all'apostolo, dalla pala per la Sala del Concistoro in Vaticano alla Lavanda dei piedi per la Basilica di San Pietro: ne deriva, tra le altre cose, anche qualche novità riguardante il poeta Giovan Battista Marino, che fu in buoni rapporti col Baglione, e il pittore Orazio Borgianni, che dopo un litigio col pittore nel 1606 si riconciliò con lui nel 1610.
