The father-daughter relationship was one that Shakespeare explored again and again. His typical pattern featured a middle-aged or older man, usually a widower, with an adolescent daughter who had spent most of her life under her father's control, protected in his house. The plays usually begin when the daughter is on the verge of womanhood and eager to assert her own identity and make her own decisions, especially in matters of the heart, even if it means going against her father's wishes. This work considers Capulet in Romeo and Juliet as an inept father to Juliet and Prospero in The Tempest as an able mentor to Miranda; Hermia in A Midsummer Night's Dream, Jessica in The Merchant of Venice and Desdemona in Othello as daughters who rebel against their fathers; Hero in Much Ado About Nothing, Lavinia in Titus Andronicus and Ophelia in Hamlet as daughters who acquiesce; Bianca in The Taming of the Shrew and Goneril and Regan in King Lear as daughters who cunningly play the good girl role; Portia in The Merchant of Venice, Viola in Twelfth Night and Rosalind in As You Like It as daughters who act in their fathers' places; and Marina in Pericles, Perdita in The Winter's Tale and Cordelia in Lear as daughters who forgive and heal.

Perdita is a tale of perseverance, courage, sacrifice and hope in the face of tremendous obstacles and discouragements brought about by the greed and evil ambitions of a renegade. Our story takes place in a fantasy setting somewhere between the middle ages and the Renaissance Period in a land familiar of tree and mountain, but not of place. As sometimes happens someone who has enough, desires more. In this case it is more power. Driven by his hate and jealousy, King Babur, servant to the High King Caelestis, contrives to kidnap the Crown Prince, who is a very small boy of three. King Caelestis's kingdom rises up in arms and pursues King Babur, who rejoices that he has achieved his greatest stroke of hatred against his enemy, and that is to take Caelestis' greatest treasure, his son. Babur flees with the child and sets his army ready to fight the High King's assault. After the war, Paul a servant and soldier of the High King as a reward, is given a quiet retirement in the far country away from Caelestis City, in Paceland. Here Paul and Beatrice share a sweet country cottage with their sweet infant Johanna. Difficult times tear Paul and Beatrice's loving family apart, causing them to be separated. In the midst of the horrors that befall Beatrice, trying to reach Paul, she loses their darling baby. We follow Paul and Beatrice on their separate paths through extreme hardship that they face with undaunted courage and hope, as they travel to join in the fight to set a world dangerously askew to rights.Separated from her family as an infant, Perdita is adopted into a peasant family and watched over by the mysterious Consuella, - Con. Con protects and provides for the widowed Jocosa and the young woman that Perdita has become. When economic and natural disasters strike their land the adopted mother, Jocosa, learns where Perdita's family is in a faraway kingdom. When there is no longer any safety in their town, they pack up to travel on foot, far across their land to the sea, hoping to find passage to the far country. .Perdita and Jocosa set out traveling towards the country of the High King, through a world that is disintegrating both socially and materially. Striking out to a place they have never been, though lands ravaged and beset with people so base as to have almost lost their humanity, they are helped and encouraged by the very rare kind people they meet along the way - renewing their strength and their vision of hope for a home of happiness and love.Seok, flows in and out of the story line as the emissary of the High King, traveling out and about to fulfill his responsibilities. In his travels he comes across Perdita and Jocosa, and when Jocosa becomes ill, uses his healing skills to care for her and her ward Perdita. His joy and confidence brightens their trek with his infectious goodwill and outlook. Friends who are strangers, and strange animals who are friends to our characters, help to feed, guide, shelter, protect, and encourage our travelers through the darkest of times on the arduous and challenging adventures toward home.Following life's upheavals and fighting a dangerous enemy, our hero and heroine strive to reunite their families and bring peace back into their lives in this medieval story of hope and love. Often remembering the words of love and promise that give them renewing energy and the will to carry on, they strive to overcome the despairing reality around them as they endeavor to focus on the unseen truth in their hearts.A lost child. Aren't we all to some degree lost and struggling in this world to find our way home? "Perdita" means just that - "Lost Child". She simply stole my heart and this is her story and how she grew till she was home.In the style of Lloyd Alexander, or Robin Mc'Kinley - a story of adoption, being lost and finding hope, traveling in a world gone terribly awry, to the safety of home.

Mary Robinson, nicknamed 'Perdita' by the Prince of Wales after her role on the London stage, was a woman in whom showmanship and reckless behaviour contrasted with romantic sensibility and radical thinking. Born in Bristol in 1758, she moved to London with her family at a young age and was trained by Garrick for the theatre. After a royal command performance as Perdita in "The Winter's Tale", she was hotly pursued by George, the 17-year-old Prince of Wales, and she became his first mistress. He gave her GBP 20,000, a house in Berkeley Square, and another in Old Windsor; the popular press followed the affair with glee and gusto. But when he left her she blackmailed him for the return of his letters. A string of other high-profile lovers followed including Lord Malden, Charles James Fox and, most notably, Lt Col Tarlton. However, a miscarriage left Mary semi-paralysed and when her last lover deserted her to marry someone else, she wrote two novels in revenge. Her growing literary reputation brought in many friends, including Coleridge but her death saw the bailiffs trying to evict her from her cottage. This lively account of one of the most extraordinary women of her age is set against the social, literary, political and military background of the times.
