'Local Responses to Global Challenges in Southeast Asia — A Transregional Studies Reader' is a collection of multidisciplinary essays, predominantly derived from papers presented at EuroSEAS 2019, the leading academic conference on Southeast Asian Studies, hosted by Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. It brings together a variety of scholars from Southeast Asia, Europe and North America, allowing for multiple flows and directionalities of knowledge productions and exchanges, be it between the Global South and North as well as within the Global South. The reader presents empirically-oriented, theoretically grounded analyses of local responses to global challenges such as knowledge-productions; notions and practices of building diverse communities; neo-populisms and contentious politics; resources and sustainability; urbanization; labor, livelihoods and mobilities. Each section starts with an introduction reviewing the state of the art. Authors will take cue from a transregional perspective understood as a distinct and alternative perspective on multi-lingual and transcultural spaces of contact, exchange and transfer. This includes a contextualization of phenomena in terms of diverse (cross) linkages and entanglements, including motilities on different scales, i.e. ranging from the local, regional to national and/or global levels. Container-based notions of place and space are addressed in a critical manner, where space and area are understood as notions beyond established systems of ordering and meta-geographies. A key goal is to allow for a consistent conceptual advancement of New Area Studies, which are critical, decentred, decolonial, diversified, and multi-disciplinary in nature.

Buku ini menunjukkan bahwa ragam identitas perempuan adalah keniscayaan, dan tersusun atas pengalaman hidup perempuan sehari-hari. Pengalaman berada pada pusaran konflik tambang, situasi perempuan mengalami pergeseran, antara eksistensi kehadiran mereka dalam konflik versus pengakuan dan negasi yang dialaminya. Posisi perempuan dalam konflik, pengakuan, dan penegasian mengantarkan penulis pada suatu kerangka inti dari nexus antara perempuan dan negara. Proses perubahan sosial sekitar konflik tambang telah merajut keragaman identitas perempuan yang konkret. Teori feminis poskolonial menunjukkan jalan tersendiri ke arah mana kelompok komunitas masyarakat yang “kalah” dalam pengelolaan sumber daya alam itu “menemukan” pembebasannya. Etnografi feminis poskolonial memfasilitasi ruang komunikasi dan menggambarkan bagai-mana komunitas “bisu” atau “subaltern” mampu bicara, menceritakan bukan hanya pengalaman pedih atas ketertindasan, eksploitasi, tetapi juga tentang luapan kegembiraan dalam merayakan kemenangan atas ruang-ruang baru mereka. Selain berisi pembahasan tentang keragaman identitas perempuan dalam konflik, buku ini juga merupakan catatan pengakuan atas keberadaan gerakan perempuan dari sudut-sudut desa terpencil. Gerakan-gerakan itu ternyata memuat unsure diskursus feminis poskolonial. Perempuan di Dunia Ketiga atau Global South seringkali hanya digambarkan secara sepihak sebagai kelompok yang tidak berdaya, namun buku ini memberikan perspektif yang berbeda, yang menunjukkan bahwa perempuan secara aktif memberdayakan diri dan kelompoknya, dan menjawab tantangan yang ada. Saya sangat gembira dengan terbitnya buku ini, mudah-mudahan peneliti dan penulis lain tergugah untuk menulis dan melakukan penelitian, untuk mengungkap suara-suara dan perspektif kelompok-kelompok yang terpinggirkan. Pada demokrasi baru Indonesia, jaringan patronase secara keseluruhan cenderung melintasi garis etnis daripada membuatnya solid, dan menumpulkan isu persaingan etnis daripada mengintensifkannya. Sesungguhnya Indonesia bukan negara di mana etnis memainkan peran besar dalam politik. Indonesia adalah negara dengan sentimen etnis yang kurang kuat. Namun demikian, penelusuran panjang menunjukkan bahwa identitas etnis dalam politik di Indonesia masih diperhitungkan. Relevansi politik etnis pada politik elektoral kontemporer masih berlanjut, misalnya terlihat jelas pada: dinamika pemilihan Kepala Daerah secara langsung, mobilisasi massa melalui simbol dan jargon etnis, dan daya tarik etnis dalam kontestasi politik lokal. Di seluruh negeri, kandidat Pilkada secara rutin memasukkan pertunjukan dan upacara adat dalam kampanye mereka, berpidato dalam bahasa lokal, mengenakan kostum tradisional, dan menyuarakan tradisi dan budaya lokal untuk meningkatkan elektabilitas mereka Namun ada bukti tentang ketidakberhasilan partai berbasis etnis dan kedaerahan. Unit-unit subnasional secara institusionalisasi kurang kuat bernuansa etnisitas. Pemilihan Kepala Daerah pun memperlihatkan pola dan kerangka suara etnis yang sangat lemah. Oleh karena itu, analisis ilmiah tentang pemilihan Kepala Daerah hanya sedikit berfokus pada etnisitas, dan justru menunjuk pada faktor lokal lain, seperti kinerja, program, kampanye media, dan hubungan dengan struktur kekuasaan lokal, dalam menjelaskan keberhasilan kandidat. Sekaligus, buku ini mendukung diskursus demokrasi langsung. Meski ada arus oligarki yang melestarikan politik transaksional, serta mendesak kembalinya demokrasi perwakilan; demokrasi langsung masih menjadi berkah politik rakyat. Ia menghidupi hak pilih warga lokal, kelompok marginal dan terpuruk untuk berdaulat.

This book presents a technical review of ecological and life history information on a range of Bornean wildlife species, aimed at identifying what makes these species sensitive to timber harvesting practices and associated impacts. It addresses three audiences: 1) those involved in assessing and regulating timber harvesting activities in Southeast Asia, 2) those involved in trying to achieve conservation goals in the region, and 3) those undertaking research to improve multipurpose forest management. This book shows that forest management can be improved in many simple ways to allow timber extraction and wildlife conservation to be more compatible than under current practices. The recommendations can also be valuable to the many governmental and non-governmental organisations promoting sustainable forest management and eco-labelling. Finally, it identifies a number of shortcomings and gaps in knowledge, which the hope can interest the scientific community and promote further research. This review is, an important scientific step toward understanding and improving sustainable forestry practices for long-term biodiversity conservation. Even in the short term, however, significant improvements can be made to improve both conservation and the efficiency of forest management, and there is no need to delay action due to a perceived lack of information. In the longer term it is expected that the recommendations from this review will be implemented, and that further research will continue to help foster an acceptable balance among the choices needed to maintain healthy wildlife populations and biodiversity in a productive forest estate.
