How And Why We Age written by Leonard Hayflick and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Aging categories.

"How long can humans live? Is immortality possible? Just what is the aging process? The aging and inevitable death of the human body have inspired more myths and outrageous quackery than anything else subject to scientific inquiry. . . . Now comes a most fascinating book, insightful and scholarly, to provide what answers have emerged so far." --San Francisco Chronicle Here, at last, preeminent cell biologist Leonard Hayflick presents the truth about human aging. Based on more than thirty years of pioneering research in the field, How and Why We Age explores not only how our major biological systems change as we grow older, but also examines the intangible alterations in our modes of thinking and feeling, our moods and sexual desires, our personality traits and our memories. With the immediacy of the latest scientific discoveries, Dr. Hayflick explains how aging affects every part of the body, and dispels many of the most persistent aging myths, to show that: * Hearts do not naturally get weaker with age. * Regular exercise and a low-fat diet won't slow aging. * Curing cancer would only add two years to the average sixty-five-year-old American life. Curing heart disease, however would add fourteen years. * Only five percent of people over the age of sixty-five are in nursing homes * No human has lived--or probably can live--past 120 years. Gracefully written, clearly organized, and packed with essential facts and statistics, How and Why We Age is a landmark study of the aging process for readers of all ages. "Written in clear, nontechnical language, it is an excellent introduction to the scientific and demographic literature on this multifacetedsubject." --Nature

Despite decades of attention on building a global HIV research and programming agenda, HIV in older populations has generally been neglected until recently. This new book focuses on HIV and aging in the context of ageism with regard to prevention, treatment guidelines, funding, and the engagement of communities and health and social service organizations. The lack of perceived HIV risk in late adulthood among older people themselves, as well on the part of providers and society in general, has led to a lack of investment in education, testing, and programmatic responses. Ageism perpetuates the invisibility of older adults and, in turn, renders current medical and social service systems unprepared to respond to patients’ needs. While ageism may lead to some advantages – discounts for services, for example – it is the negative aspects that must be addressed when determining the appropriate community-level response to the epidemic.

Atherosclerosis Large Arteries And Cardiovascular Risk written by Michel Safar and has been published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Medical categories.

Arterial stiffness is now firmly established as an important and independent predictor of cardiovascular risk. The structural and functional changes of the large arteries may be age-related, but a number of conditions have been associated with accelerated arterial stiffening including the hypertensive diseases, atherosclerosis, end-stage renal disease, and traditional cardiovascular risk factors such as diabetes mellitus and smoking. This book presents the current thinking of international experts regarding the underlying mechanisms of cardiovascular risk, and the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of large arterial stiffness and reduced large arterial distensibility. It not only gives new insights into the relationship between arterial stiffness and atherosclerosis, but also establishes the possible interactions with age and other cardiovascular factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes and hyperlipidemia. Finally, the therapeutic means of approaching arterial stiffness are analyzed in detail and new perspectives for the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases are developed. Authoritative and up-to-date, this book is a valuable resource for basic scientists interested in vascular physiology and pathophysiology, for clinicians in the areas of cardiology, diabetes and renal diseases, as well as for investigators in drug development.
