Victor Robert Lee's provocative literary spy novel Performance Anomalies launches a protagonist, partly of Chinese and Russian origin, to rival the most memorable espionage heroes. Cono 7Q is a startling young man of haunting heritage who has been gifted - or cursed - with an accelerated nervous system. An orphan and a loner, he acts as a freelance clandestine agent, happy to use his strange talents in the service of dubious organizations and governments - until, in Kazakhstan, on a personal mission to rescue a former lover, he is sucked into a deadly maelstrom of betrayal that forces him to question all notions of friendship and allegiance. Relevant to our geopolitical times, Performance Anomalies tracks the expansion of Beijing's imperial reach into Central Asia, and the takeover of corruption-riddled Kazakhstan. Cono 7Q's main adversary is a brutal Beijing agent whose personality has been twisted by the Cultural Revolution's devastation of his family. Performance Anomalies travels from Brazil and Stanford to Kazakhstan and the Tian Shan mountains, covering an engrossing emotional landscape set against the backdrop of an emerging new cold war between America and both China and Russia.

With the huge variety of data and equally large-scale systems, there is not unique execution setting for these systems which can guarantee best performance for each of the query. In this project, we tried so study impact of different execution settings on execution time of workloads by varying them one at a time. Using the data from these experiments, a decision tree was built where each internal node represents the execution parameter, each branch represents value chosen for the parameter and each leaf node represents a range for execution time in minutes. The attribute in the decision tree to split dataset on is selected based on maximum information gain or lowest entropy. Once the tree is trained with training samples, this tree can be used to get approximate range for expected execution time. When the actual execution time differs from this expected value, a performance anomaly can be detected. For a test data with 460 samples, 95% of samples had actual execution in the range of predicted time by the decision tree. Also analyzing the constructed tree, an idea about what configuration can give better performance for a workload can be obtained. Initial experiments suggest that the impact an execution parameter can have on target attribute (here execution time) can be related to distance of that feature node from the root of the constructed decision tree. From initial results the percent change in values of target attribute for various value of feature node which is closer to root is 6 times larger than when that same feature node is away from root node. This observation will depend on how well the decision tree was trained and may not be true for every case.

Prescriptive treatments of performance measurement often recommend or presume three seemingly commonsense principles for the design of measurement systems: 1) clear definition of performance; 2) accurate measurement; and, 3) linkage between favorable outcomes and rewards to workers. We focus on four vignettes from field research in the airline industry in which high performance seems anomalous with respect to these principles. By considering these vignettes in light of economic and organizational theories, we suggest two broad models of high performance measurement: one based on compliance that is consistent with the above principles, and one based on ambiguity that is inconsistent with the principles.
