Dans le cadre de sa saison « Image/Photographie » programmée chaque printemps, la Maison d’Art Bernard Anthonioz à Nogent-sur-Marne présente, du 31 mai au 22 juillet 2018, une exposition intitulée Performance TV, dont le commissariat est assuré par Mathilde Roman. L’exposition rassemble des œuvres de différents médiums (films, vidéos, performances, photographies, sculptures, installations, dessins) d’artistes femmes autour des questions liées à la performance et à la vidéo, prenant comme points de départ le travail de l’artiste espagnole Esther Ferrer et l’histoire de la MABA. Avec Anna Byskov (Équateur), Tacita Dean (Royaume-Uni), Hélène Delprat (France), Esther Ferrer (Espagne), Lidwine Prolonge (France), Laure Prouvost (France), et Cally Spooner (Royaume-Uni). En 1983 et 1985, Esther Ferrer est invitée par des festivals vidéo en Espagne et réfléchit à ce que peut produire l'association a priori antinomique de « Performance » et « TV ». Comment performer avec une image pré-enregistrée, donc maîtrisée et dépossédée du hasard et du vivant ? Comment faire de la vidéo un élément actif ? Esther Ferrer joue avec son image filmée, avec son corps physiquement présent, et avec le public parfois pris au piège. L'exposition Performance TV propose une reconstitution autant physique que mentale de ces projets, dont certains n'ont jamais été réalisés, et les met en dialogue avec des oeuvres d'autres artistes. Le film Event for a Stage de Tacita Dean (2015), réalisé lors de quatre performances publiques pendant la Biennale de Sydney, résulte d'un face-à-face entre l'artiste, un acteur (Stephen Dillane) et un public, dans une relation complexe qui ne cesse d'interroger ses propres cadres. C'est à une expérience forte de la relation entre image, parole et regard rejouée dans le cadre théâtralisé de la projection 16mm que nous immerge ce film dont le montage perturbe les repères spatio-temporels de la performance initiale. Entourée d’ateliers, d’une bibliothèque et d’une maison de retraite pour artistes au sein d’un parc à Nogent-sur-Marne, la Maison d'Art Bernard Antonioz est ici mise en abîme dans ses différents espaces et usages. L'histoire du lieu constitue une archive passionnante où résonne la vie intime des deux soeurs (Jeanne Smith et Madeleine Smith-Champion) qui en firent don à leur mort. Anna Byskov et Lidwine Prolonge s'y sont toutes deux immergées en tirant les fils de leurs propres recherches autour des structures du récit, sur les relations entre sens et langage, entre performance et image, entre proximité et distance. L'artiste présent avec son corps ou son image interroge aussi sa place et son statut, et plus spécifiquement sa position d'artiste-femme, mais aussi le rôle du spectateur. « Looking at you looking at us » : c'est ainsi que Laure Prouvost s'adresse à un public d'emblée intégré au dispositif d'exposition. Dialoguant avec l'histoire de l'art et ses représentations codifiées, dont le corps de la femme est un motif récurrent, sa série de tapisserie-vidéos met en jeu de multiples strates avec un humour provocateur. Cally Spooner se glisse elle aussi dans les lieux avec un projet poursuivant ses questionnements sur l’écriture des mouvements et sur le prolongement de la dimension performative en dehors des corps. Enfin, Hélène Delprat vient habiter à nouveau la MABA avec un récit qui poursuit les fantômes de la mémoire.
